3 Fire Safety Policy Tampering with fire and safety equipment is a violation of state law and university regulations Tampering is defined as any action that may damage or interfere with the normal functioning of the fire and life safety system

4 So, what are some violations?

5 Items Hanging From Sprinkler Head Hanging items from sprinkler head could cause a malfunction in the sprinkler system. This could discharge up to 30 to 40 gallons of water per minute Note: As of August 2005, there are no sprinklers in Whitis Court and Simkins

6 Items on Top of Soffit Items stored on top of the soffit could damage sprinkler piping inside. This could also cause a malfunction in the sprinkler system

7 Propping Door Open According to the State Fire Marshal, all doors must close automatically in order to prevent the spread of a fire.

8 Other Fire/Life Safety Violations Include: Tampering with smoke detectors Tampering with fire extinguishers Tampering with safety related signage (e.g. evacuation diagrams and exit signs) Tampering with door closers Tampering with fire alarm system (includes sirens, pull stations, lights, etc.)

9 Household Appliances By order of the University Fire Marshal, the use of any appliance with open heating coils is prohibited Students found in violation of policy will be directed to immediately remove the prohibited items and be subject to disciplinary action, including fines

11 Other Violations Include Toaster Oven Fry Daddy Crock Pots George Foreman Grills Hot Plates Electric Woks Electric Skillets Hamburger Cookers Bread Cookers Microwaves (other than one provided) Refrigerators (other than one provided) Any appliance with open heating coils Coffee/Drink heaters

13 Other Approved Appliances Include: Coffee Grinders Blenders Air Popcorn Poppers Food Dehydrators Juicers Electric Can Openers

14 Electrical Extensions The Fire Marshal has indicated that use of extension cords or multiple plug converters (multiplug) is prohibited Only Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) approved power strips with a circuit breaker are allowed
