4. Introduction Continued What is the MOUSE TechSource Survey? Designed by: MOUSE (Making Opportunities for Upgrading Schools & Education) and NYC OIT (NYCDOE Office of Instructional Technology) The “TechSource” 15 minute video survey asks: “What do teachers think about various uses of technology in teaching and learning?”

5. Introduction Continued TechSource Survey Purpose 1.Illustrate examples of technology integration into teaching and learning. 2.Give teachers the opportunity to voice opinion(s) about technology integration. 3.Help the DOE with strategic planning and professional development planning.

Survey Demonstration 1.Install the videos –Using the thumb drive supplied to you, plug it into a USB drive on your tablet. –Open the USB disk drive in “my computer.” –Copy each of the three videos on the thumb drive into the following folder:  Local disk (C) / edc –Copy the videos onto your own thumb drive for use with your coaches.

7. Survey Demonstration Continued 2.Download the survey –STEP 1: log in Connect to the internet. Go to favorites, select “coach survey”—which directs you to http://milhouse.edc.org:8080/ts/.http://milhouse.edc.org:8080/ts/ Scroll to the bottom of the page and select “coach”. The password is: “mouse.” Enter: –Your email address, name and region number. –Password: mouse Select “log in.” IMPORTANT: Your tablet orientation must be vertical (no keyboard).

8. Survey Demonstration Continued 3.Download the survey ( continued ) –STEP 2: download Download the installer by selecting “run the installer.” Select the “open” button. WAIT while the software downloads (less than a minute).

9. Survey Demonstration Continued 3.Download the survey ( continued ) –STEP 3: install A window will pop up and ask if you want to install the survey... Click on “yes.” After a few seconds, another window will indicate you are finished… Click on “OK.” Minimize your browser by clicking the minimizer button in the upper right hand corner.

10. Survey Demonstration Continued 3.Download the survey ( continued ) –STEP 4: open the survey Go to “my computer” / “local disk (C), and open the “edc” folder. Inside, you will see many “swf” files. Double click on the TechSource.swf icon to open the survey (not the TechSource folder) An error message may pop up. If it does, choose “select the program from a list” and select “OK.” Select internet explorer and then “OK.”

11. Survey Demonstration Continued 4.Take the survey. Select a survey teaching level. Select “interview” to begin taking the survey. 5.Save the survey answers Complete ALL questions When you reach the “Thank you” page click on “save” in the lower left hand corner of the screen. A dialogue box will ask: “are you ready to submit…”. Click “yes.”

Instruct Coaches to Take the Survey Preparation & Important Information –Reserve 20-30 minutes to administer the survey to coaches at the end of your trainings, AT the training location. –Ask coaches to copy the 3 videos from your thumb drive onto their tablets (do in advance, if possible). –Have INTERNET ACCESS available and working. –Have headphones and/or space to spread out. –Make sure Coach tablets are in Tablet (vertical) Mode! –Have PowerPoint and projector available for your presentation.

Instruct Coaches to Take the Survey Explain the Survey Purpose MOUSE (Making Opportunities for Upgrading Schools & Education; www.mouse.org) and the DOE have designed a 15 minute video survey.www.mouse.org The survey will: –Illustrate examples of possible technology integration. –Give you the opportunity to voice your opinion about technology integration. –Help the DOE planning processes.

14. Instruct Coaches to Take the Survey Explain HOW to Take the Survey; Tell coaches: Take your time. Follow directions. Be as honest as possible. Your answers are confidential and no one will know your identity. Choose the answer that MOST closely represents your opinion. I cannot help. (Say: do the best you can.”) Finish ALL questions and SAVE your answers at the end.

15. Instruct Coaches to Take the Survey Give Directions for Downloading the Survey ***Note: the tablet orientation MUST be vertical. Use the handout, or Use the PowerPoint, if possible. To download these, go to: www.mousets.org www.mousets.org “Coach Instructions”

16. Troubleshoot Possible Problems 1.A coach cannot download the survey. –Make sure you have consistent Internet access. –Be sure you are not overloading the wireless w/ too many downloading at once. –Check the email and/or try a different email. 2.It is too noisy for many people to take the survey all at the same time. –You need to ask Coaches to bring headphones in advance.

Troubleshoot Possible Problems (continued) 3.A coach goes through the whole download process but cannot see the survey grade level choices. –This means there was sporadic Internet access during the download and opening of the survey icon. Try again. 4.A coach cannot see the “next” button at the bottom of the screen. –Make sure the tablet is oriented VERTICALLY. You must be in TABLET MODE to take the survey. 5.Coaches feel that do not have enough time. –You need to PLAN FOR enough time so this does not happen.
