Common Core Georgia Performance Standards Universal Design for Learning, Part 1 Cynde Snider, PhD, NBCT Program Specialist, Georgia Department of Education

Learning Targets 1.I can explain the history and purpose of Universal Design. 2.I can use examples to illustrate how the three principles of Universal Design for Learning can be implemented in a classroom. 3.I can compare and contrast UDL and differentiation.

What is Universal Design?

It’s ALL about ACCESS!

Access for All 1973—Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act banned discrimination on basis of disability for recipients of federal funds July 26, 1990 –Americans with Disabilities Act prohibited discrimination resulting from inaccessible buildings, etc.

Why is Universal Design different from modifying existing structures to accommodate people with disabilities?

Retrofitting Universal Design

Universal Design for Learning Traditional ApproachUDL Approach Assumes that the curricula is fixed: accommodations, modifications, and even differentiation, are retrofits that must be made in order to deal with student diversity. Assumes that the inflexible curricula is disabled: curricula needs to be designed or redesigned to meet the needs of a wide diversity of students from the start.

So What? Common Core State Standards Initiative PARCC Common Assessments ESEA Waiver

Learning Targets 1.I can explain the history and purpose of Universal Design.

What does Universal Design for Learning look like?

Principles of UDL Learning Task #1 UDL Guidelines VideoUDL Guidelines Video (6:21) Principles of UDL Graphic Organizer (Handout #1) Learning target: I can use examples to illustrate how the three principles of Universal Design for Learning can be implemented in a classroom. Time for learning task: 15 minutes.

Debrief Learning Task #1 CAST (2008). Universal design for learning guidelines version 1.0. Wakefield, MA: Author.

Understanding Through Examples Learning Task #2 Math Concepts, Grade 1Math Concepts, Grade 1 (video) Examples of UDL Principles in Action (Handout #2) Learning target: I can use examples to illustrate how the three principles of Universal Design for Learning can be implemented in a classroom. Time for learning task: 15 minutes.

Debrief Learning Task #2 1. What strategies, behaviors, and/or processes did you see in the video? 2. How do these examples illustrate the three principles of UDL?

Learning Targets 1.I can explain the history and purpose of Universal Design. 2.I can use examples to illustrate how the three principles of Universal Design for Learning can be implemented in a classroom.

How are UDL and differentiation alike and how are they different?

Tenga Cuidado Con Los Alces ムースに注意 ذار من موسح Beware of Moose Differentiation UDL

RtI, Differentiation, and UDL Tier 4 Tier 3 Tier 2 Statewide: CCGPS and GPS—WHAT District-wide/School-wide: Local curricula incorporate UDL Principles to maximize student access Classrooms: Instruction is differentiated based on the readiness, interests, or learner profile data of specific students in the class HOW Tier 1

Universal Design for Learning DifferentiationUDL Based on readiness, interests, and/ or learner profiles of individual learners Based on recognition, strategic, and affective networks in the brains of all learners Different content, products, and processes Multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement Flexible grouping is the keyFlexibility is the key

Learning Targets 1.I can explain the history and purpose of Universal Design. 2.I can use examples to illustrate how the three principles of Universal Design for Learning can be implemented in a classroom. 3.I can compare and contrast UDL and differentiation.

Preview of Part 2 How can I incorporate UDL principles to scaffold instruction and build student self-efficacy and independence?
