4 R ADIO E NTERTAINS Almost every home had a radio Families gather spent several hours a day to listen to their favorite programs President Roosevelt chose radio for his “fireside chats” Radio programs offered: news, comedies, dramas, soap operas, & children’s shows Soap operas aired early in the afternoon sponsored by soap companies The Guiding Light Children programs aired late in the afternoon The Lone Ranger Homemakers were the prime audience for soap operas Gave them imagination while doing housework

5 N ETWORKS P ROVIDE G REAT D RAMA & C OMEDY Radio networks = dramas and variety programs. Featured stars Bob Hope, Jack Benny, George Burns, Gracie Allen, and Orson Welles. Orson Welles created the radio broadcast “The War of the Worlds.” later directed movie classics “Citizen Kane” “A Touch of Evil”.
