The King Is Coming Why did Jesus enter Jerusalem on Palm Sunday in the way He did? 1. He came to die Jesus tells us Himself – Mark 10:32-34 The Time Is Now John 12:12-23

Mark 10:32-34 (NASB) 32 They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him, 33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34 They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”

Zechariah 9:9 (NASB) 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

He came that the Scriptures may be fulfilled Jesus considered Himself to be bound by Scripture Zechariah 9:9 John tells us that the disciples did not understand this at the time but understood it later Even to the end, Jesus was teaching The Time Is Now John 12:12-23

He came to be our Passover lamb This was the day the lambs were selected for the Passover sacrifice Josephus writes in one account of 256,500 Jesus would have literally been surrounded by them Jesus is killed with these lambs, becoming our Passover lamb! The Time Is Now John 12:12-23

The Hour Has Come “Sir, we would like to see Jesus” They were Greeks at the Feast Only allowed into the Court of the Gentiles Went to Philip because his name was Greek Philip hesitates and gets Andrew Both from Bethsaida, a Greek town Jesus had at times confused the disciples – Matthew 10:5-6, Mark 7:27, and John 4:22 The Time Is Now John 12:12-23

Matthew 10:5-6 (NASB) 5 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: “Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Mark 7:27 (NASB) 27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” John 4:22 (NASB) 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

The Hour Has Come What does Jesus’ response tell us? Jesus’ hour had finally come Jesus’ answer was not what was expected They were used to hearing, “My time has not yet come” – John 2:4; 7:6,8; 7:30; 8:20 Somehow linked to the coming of the Gentiles These Greeks are a sign that Jesus’ sacrifice would be for the whole world John focuses on the contrast between the rejecting Pharisees and the seeking Gentiles! The Hour Has Come What does Jesus’ response tell us? Jesus had to be glorified First, Jesus’ circle was expanding, not constricting We often try to break into the inner circle Jesus was about expanding that circle – Rev 5:9-10 The Time Is Now John 12:12-23

Revelation 5:9-10 (NASB) 9 And they *sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. 10 “You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”

The Hour Has Come What does Jesus’ response tell us? Application Is Jesus your Passover lamb? Have you received Him as your Savior? Are you believing in Jesus’ example or in Jesus your once and for all sacrifice for your sin? Are you constantly asking, “I would like to see Jesus”? The Time Is Now John 12:12-23
