Foundation 19 BC: The Romans built Cologne. At first, they named it: Oppidum Ubiorum. Because of Empress Agrippina it was called Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensum (Colonia Agrippina) in 50 AD.

The Heinzelmännchen-Brunnen… … was donated in the year 1899 by the “Cölner Verschönerungsverein” on the occasion of August Kopisch’s 100th birthday. It was arranged by Edmund and Heinrich Renard. The legend of the diligent helpers who came at night and took away a little bit of annoying work from each citizen of the city, inspired the poet August Kopisch. So he wrote the poem " Die Heinzelmännchen zu Cölln ".

“ 4711 ” 4711 Original Eau de Cologne is one of the oldest brands and famous throughout the world. The secret formula for 4711 Original Eau de Cologne is still appreciated across the globe to this day. At the end of the 18th century when the French army came to Cologne, the commander gave the instruction to “number” the houses, so that no chaos happens when quartering the troops. The number of the house in which the company was, was 4711. A few years later, Mülhens had the idea to take the number 4711 as the registered trade mark for his perfume. And today, 4711 means everywhere in the world: “Eau de Cologne”.

The Old University It was based on 21st May 1388 as the fourth university in the Roman realm. On 28th April 1798, when the Frenchmen were in Cologne, the university was named “Université de Cologne”. Now, it’s one of the biggest universities in Europe. Students today : about 44.000

Romanesque Churches Cologne is a city of churches. As in no other German city, large Roman churches are located in the confined area within the boundaries of the mediaeval city wall, churches which rank among the most important in Western Europe: Groß St. Martin, St. Maria Lyskirchen, St. Severin, St. Kunibert, St. Gereon, St. Pantaleon, St. Maria im Kapitol, St. Aposteln, St. Andreas, St. Ursula, St. Cäcilien and St. Georg.

Cologne Cathedral Start of construction was in 1248 (a date easy to remember). The Cologne Cathedral is 157 m high and (after the “Ulmer Münster”) the second highest cathedral in Germany and the third highest cathedral in the world. From 1880 to 1884 it was even the highest building in the world. In 1996 it was classified by the UNESCO as a World cultural heritage. On 5th July 2004 it was on the red list of endangered world heritage because of a plan of skyscrapers around the cathedral. 2006 they decided not to do it and to remove the cathedral from the red list.
