3 The Holy Roman Empire By 1077, large conflicts started to occur between monarchs and Church officials. Much like Charlemagne, Otto I worked with the pope to defeat rebellious nobles. In 962, the pope crowned Otto as the emperor. – His later successors would have the title Holy Roman Emperor because they were crowned by the Pope. Most emperors clashed with the pope over appointments of people to different church positions.

4 The Feud Between Pope and Emperor Pope Gregory VII vs. Henry IV – Gregory wanted the pope to have the only power to appoint bishops to office – Henry thought since he gave the bishops land he should be the one to give them their office – Gregory excommunicated Henry but Henry repented his sins to save his throne. – Henry lead an army to Rome and forced the pope to exile Concordant of Worms-agreement that the Church has the power to elect bishops, the emperor had to give the bishop land

6 Church Power Reaches Its Height In 1198, Pope Innocent the III claimed supremacy. “The pope stands between God and man, lower than God but higher than men, who judges all and is judged by no one.” – What does Innocent mean by this quote? Innocent placed King Phillip II of France under an interdict for trying to annul his marriage. This started a crusade, or holy war against Albigensians in southern France. – The Albigensians were a group of people who rejected central Catholic beliefs and rituals. Tens of thousands were killed. Pope Innocent issued decrees that justified his new power.
