3 Monday/Tuesday Introduce the students to the holiday by discussing with the class what they think Cinco de Mayo really is about. Assessment: Have the students create a drawing/story of what the class thinks the holiday is. Differentiation: For the students who are ELL or have a documented disability, have them pictorially draw what they think it is about or color the map of Mexico. (Click here for the map)here Materials: Construction paper, pencils, markers, crayons, and scissors

4 Wednesday Educate the student’s about the true meaning behind Cinco de Mayo; how it was a battle that took place 41 years after the Mexicans had already gained their independence from France. Assessment: Have the students create a story using the vocabulary words on the following slide. Differentiation: Have the students cut out and paste the words on construction paper in the correct ABC order. Materials: Lined paper, pencils, coloring sheets, crayons

6 Thursday red for union Discuss the importance of the symbols in the Mexican flag. Green stands for Hope; white for purity and red for union. Assessment: Have the students color and label the Mexican flag. (Coloring sheet here)here Differentiation: Allow the students to color the flag and cut it out to hang in the classroom. Materials: Coloring sheets, crayons, scissors, pencils, straws, and glue.

7 Friday Ask the students to plan a modern day Cinco de Mayo celebration, complete with food and games. After they turn in their assignments, have a party for the class. Assessment: Have the students work in pairs to plan their party and create a piñata for their theme. Differentiation: Create Piñatas with the class, showing step by step instructions. Materials: Lined paper, pencils, tissue paper, balloon, small bowls, glue, and string
