6  Lab is approximately 20% of lecture grade  Pre-Labs = 30 points  Lab Reports = 130 points  Laboratory Final = 30 points  Total Points = 190 SYLLABUS - GRADING

7  1 week late: -1 point  2 weeks late: -2 points  3 weeks late: -4 points  Over 3 weeks: No Credit SYLLABUS – LATE WORK

8  DO NOT PLAGARIZE!  Best Case Scenario – Report receives no points  Moderate Case Scenario – Failure of entire course  Worst Case Scenario – Expulsion from YCP SYLLABUS ACADEMIC HONESTY

11  Dress:  Properly fitting clothing  Close-toe and close- heel shoes  Long hair should be pulled back LAB SAFETY

12  Avoid:  Neckties  Scarfs  Long Necklaces  Bracelets  Polyester clothing LAB SAFETY

13  General Rules:  NEVER work alone  NO unauthorized experiments  DO NOT come to lab under the influence  NO food or drinks in the lab LAB SAFETY

14  Please let me know of any physical conditions you may have  Allergies, medical conditions, et cetera.  USE COMMON SENSE! LAB SAFETY

15  Eye protection MUST be worn AT ALL TIMES while doing an experiment  If you wear contacts please have red tape on your safety glasses LAB SAFETY

16  Fire in the Lab: What to do?  Bench-top fire  Extinguish the fire  Inverted Beaker  Watch Glass  Notify Instructor LAB SAFETY

17  Fire in the lab: What to do?  Fire on the lab bench  Get the fire extinguisher  Spray at the base of the flame  Notify the instructor LAB SAFETY

18  Using a fire extinguisher:  P: Pull the Pin  A: Aim at the base of the fire  S: Squeeze the handle  S: Sweep LAB SAFETY

19  Fire in the lab: What to do?  Large Fire  Shut off the gas  Close hoods (if able)  Pull the fire alarm  Notify the instructor  Exit the building LAB SAFETY

20  Fire in the lab: What to do?  Person on fire  Stop-Drop-Roll  Fire Blanket  Safety Shower  Notify Instructor  NEVER RUN! LAB SAFETY

21  Right To Know  OSHA Worker’s Rights Act 1970  Safety Data Sheets  There is a data sheet for every chemical used for each lab experiment LAB SAFETY

22  Flammable Solvents  Must be used in the hood  NEVER pour down the drain LAB SAFETY

23  Respiratory Hazards  Concentrated Acids  Ammonium Hydroxide  ALWAYS work in the hood LAB SAFETY

24  Chemical Burn Hazards  Concentrated Acid  Concentrated Base LAB SAFETY

25  Cumulative Poisons  ALWAYS work in the hood  DO NOT inhale  Silver  Mercury  Lead

26  Toxic Chemicals:  Skin absorption hazards  In some cases, gloves will be required and not optional LAB SAFETY

27  Explosive Hazards:  Organic compounds will react violently with certain substances LAB SAFETY

28  Accidents in the lab:  Be aware of your surrounds when working with chemicals LAB SAFETY

29  Hood Use:  Hoods remove toxic and flammable vapors from the lab  When in doubt, use the hood! LAB SAFETY

30  Waste Procedures:  NOT all chemicals can be put down the drain  Special containers will be provided for proper disposal of chemicals  DO NOT FILL THE WASTE JUG ABOVE THE LINE ON THE CONTAINER!!!!!  If the container is too full notify the instructor or lab assistant LAB SAFETY
