ROBIN HOOD A CASE STUDY ON
2
ABOUT THE CASE First year of Revolt: built a large body of men with grievances; made a disciplined fighting force; housed in Sherwood Forest Robin ruled supreme; had lieutenants to whom he delegated functions Fame spread; the band grew As the band grew, discipline slackened and food was scarce. Revenues were running short as the rich were avoiding the forest At the same time, the Barons wanted to overthrow Prince John, bring King Richard back, and wanted Robin Hood to help them in exchange for amnesty.

Mission: “Overthrow the Sheriff” Vision: “Socio-economic equality for all” Strategic objective: “Rob the rich and give to the poor” Financial Objective : To generate continuous revenue so that in addition to providing to the poor, he has enough funds left to distribute among his men and satisfy their food and other basic needs. Strategy to achieve objective: Recruit more people into the band Way of implementing and executing strategy: Robin Hood is the supreme authority and he appointed lieutenants to assist him in his daily functioning Monitoring, evaluating and taking corrective action: Unable to maintain discipline and proper functioning of the band. Also was unable to convince his lieutenants about the advantages of adopting new strategies

Roles of a CEORatings Interact with Lieutenants and monitor the external and operating environments for shifts or trends to identify new business opportunities. Establish strong interpersonal relationship with his lieutenants and his band members Delegation of authority to his lieutenants and advice them on operating and functional environments Review of existing policies and formulation of new policies To oversee that all the operations of the organization are aligned with the business’s strategy, mission, vision and objectives Create a workforce consisting of highly competent individuals Manage the organization’s resources efficiently and increase the revenues generated
7
Q 2:- W HAT IS STRATEGIC VISION OF CEO ? D O YOU APPROVE OF THE COMPANY ’ S NEW STRATEGIC DIRECTION ? W AS IT TIME FOR COMPANY TO FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGE DIRECTION ? W HY ?
8
Strategic vision of the CEO: “Socio-economic equality for all” New strategic direction: Implementation of a fixed transit tax OR Alliance with the barons to dethrone Prince John and release King Richard Reasons why there was a fundamental need to change direction:- Internal factors Increasing size of the band and improper assigning of work, poor discipline among the band members, chances of being caught were increasing as no strong vigilance Food and funds were both becoming scarce External factors Sheriff was growing stronger by the day and was becoming more and more organized Travellers were adopting different routes to avoid passing through the forest
9
Q3:- W HAT IS YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE FINANCIAL & STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES CEO HAS SET FOR THE COMPANY ? D O THEY CONTAIN TOO MUCH STRETCH ? T OO LITTLE STRETCH ?
10
Strategic objective : Abridge the Sheriff of his power and “Rob the rich and give to the poor” Assessment: The objective although was good was a short term one. Was to some extent aligned to support the financial objective. Financial objective : To generate continuous revenue so that in addition to providing to the poor, he has enough funds left to distribute among his men and satisfy their food and other basic needs. Assessment: It was enough for the organization to sustain but not grow and develop. He didn’t have any plans for generating excess revenue to increase his band’s savings.
11
Q 4 :- W HAT NEW AND DIFFERENT STRATEGY ELEMENTS HAVE BEEN INITIATED BY THE CEO ? H OW WELL DOES NEW STRATEGY SEEM TO MATCH FEATURES OF COMPANY ’ S RESOURCE STRENGTH, COMPETITIVE CAPABILITIES AND CULTURE ?
12
New strategies which Robin Hood wanted to initiate: 1) Fixed transit tax: Would ensure a steady income from travellers who were otherwise avoiding travel through Sherwood forest. 2) Join the barons in their mission to rescue King Richard: Would take a chance of getting King Richard back and getting rid of both Prince John & the Sheriff in 1 go. Get amnesty as well as maybe capital to grow and feed his troops
13
Q 5 :- H OW WELL HAS THE COMPANY ’ S NEW STRATEGY BEEN IMPLEMENTED SO FAR ? W HAT PROBLEMS OR MISSTEPS DO YOU SEE ? H OW IMPORTANT HAS THE IMPORTANT STAFF BEEN TO THE IMPLEMENTATION EFFORTS ? W ERE THEY A GOOD CHOICE ? W HY OR WHY NOT ?
14
Unable to implement the new strategy for the following reasons: 1) Fixed transit tax: His lieutenants were strongly against the idea as it would involve levying taxes on the farmers & townspeople who were their important allies. 2) Join the barons in their mission to rescue King Richard: Ambiguous about the outcome. Chances of being caught were really high because of Prince John’s strong spy network. The lieutenants weren’t kept in the loop in this decision. The lieutenants fulfilled the tasks that were assigned to them. However since Robin was the supreme authority, their opinions and decisions weren’t given a lot of consideration.
15
Q 6:- H AS THE CEO BEEN EFFECTIVE IN EVALUATING THE COMPANY ’ S PERFORMANCE, MONITORING NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND INITIATING CORRECTIVE ADJUSTMENTS ? D OES CEO APPEAR TO HAVE PERSONAL TRAITS WELL SUITED TO REFINING & FINE - TUNING THE COMPANY ’ S STRATEGY & IMPLEMENTATION EFFORTS ? A RE HER / HIS STRENGTHS BETTER SUITED TO INSTITUTING SWEEPING CHANGED AND QUICKLY MOVING TO A NEW PROJECT ?
16
Yes,To the extent when the strength of the band was within his control, where he could evaluate and monitor the company's performance. Traits Posessed by CEO Risk taker First mover advantage Respond quickly and opportunistically to new developments The CEO doesn't have enough personal traits to refine and fine tune the company's strategy because the present strategy has reached its limitations and is become obsolete the enemy (the sheriff) is now better organized and prepared for an attack from Robin and his men. Band's strength is increasing plus there is food scarcity The CEO needs to have a have a proactive approach and also have the complete know how of all the operations of the band Yes, his strengths are better suited to moving to new options and strategies. Plans of smaller magnitude suit him better bcoz he has proved himself in the initial stages resulting in the growing success of his band.
17
Q 7 :- W HAT ADDITIONAL A CTIONS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND CEO TAKE TO HELP THE COMPANY TO ACHIEVE ITS LONG TERM STRATEGIC & FINANCIAL OBJECTIVES ? A RE ANY CHANGES NEEDED IN THE COMPANY ’ S VISION ? I T ’ S OBJECTIVES ? I T ’ S STRATEGY ? I T ’ S IMPLEMENTATION EFFORTS ? W HAT CHALLENGES MIGHT THE NEW STRATEGY PRESENT TO THE TOP MANAGEMENT TEAM ?
18
Take a broad look at the entire organization structure by conducting a SWOT analysis. Organization is highly unorganized. There is not much interaction between the departments. There should be decentralization of control to some extent. In addition to the existing lieutenants, Robin could appoint more people to handle the following functions: Vigilance, Recruitment to recruit people sharing a similar vision and someone to monitor discipline. Change his strategic and financial objectives; New strategic objective : Expand and create dominance New financial objective : Increase the revenue and maintain the level of expenses if not bring them down.
19
S TRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVES Cost advantage (fixed transit tax) Restructuring the departments and assigning lieutenants in charge on teams. (help in administrative purpose) Delegation of work to the line managers Downsizing (removing the excess unwanted manpower) and also training the existing people so that they perform better. Recruiting of people sharing a similar vision. Changing from old war methods to newer ones which could utilize the workforce better. Join the barons to overthrow Prince John thus getting rid of the Sheriff also in the process and also receiving amnesty. Expansion into newer markets
20
M AJOR C HALLENGES FACED Resistance to accept change and disagreements on the new style and purpose Difficulty in over-throwing the sheriff who was becoming stronger both financially and in terms of manpower Challenge to organize big and little groups Assessing the band members performance and getting ridding of the excessive workforce (down – sizing)
