LIGHT OR HEAVY? By: Cecily Flores

Have you ever tried to carry a cooler full of ice?

Have you ever carried a puppy?

Why do you think you could carry the puppy but not the cooler?

A puppy feels light when you pick it up. A cooler feels heavy. This is because they have different weights.

Weight is a word we use when we measure. We weigh things to find out how heavy they are.

Sometimes we pick things up to guess if they are heavy, light, or about the same weight. Other times we can use scales to find out the exact weight. The heavier thing makes the scales go down.

Which one do you think is lighter the feather or the stone? Example:

How would you make sure that you have guessed correctly?

By using a balance scale like this one, you can find out.

Which one do you think is heavier, the cat or the books?

Which one do you think is heavier the ball or the dinosaur?

But why do you think knowing about weight is important?

We weigh ingredients when we cook. Only a small amount of flour is needed to make a cake.

Clerks often weigh food when they sell it. We pay for the weight of food that we buy.

Luggage is weighed at the airport before it is loaded onto a plane, if a plane were overloaded it could not fly safely.

Even doctors weigh their patients to make sure they are growing properly.

So let’s review… Sometimes we guess the weight of things. Sometimes we use scales to know the exact weight. Things can be heavy or light. And it is very important that we know about weight because we use it everyday.
