(Mon) Earthquakes make 3 main types of waves. In physics, there are 2 types of waves. What do you think these two types are and how do they move? (5 min / 8 pts)

Types: Longitudinal Transverse Direction: Medium moves same direction as wave motion Medium moves perpendicular or at right angles to wave motion

(Tue) A transverse wave has 5 parts that help describe the wave. What are these parts? (5 min / 10 pts)

 Crest  Trough  Amplitude  Wavelength  Frequency or Period

(Wed) A transverse wave is made in a slinky that has a frequency of 5 cycles per second (Hz) and the wavelength is measured at 0.25 meters. What is the velocity of the wave in the slinky? (5 min / 6 pts)

v = f x λ v = (5 cycles/second)(0.25 meters) v = 1.25 m/s V X = f λ

(Thu) A transverse wave is made in a slinky that has a velocity of 15 m/s and a wavelength of 0.50 meters. What is the frequency of the wave in the slinky? (5 min / 6 pts)

v = f x λ 15 m/s = (f)(0.50 m) f = (15 m/s)/(0.5 m) V f λ f = 30 1/s = 30 Hz ∕ = f = 30 Hz

(Fri) What is the difference between the frequency and the period of a wave? If we shake the super-slinky up and down so that it crests 24 times in 5 seconds, what is the period and the frequency of the wave? (8 min/8 pts)

Difference: Frequency = # cycles happen time span Period = time span # cycles f = # crests / # seconds f = 24 crests / 5 seconds f = 4.8 Hz T = # seconds / crest T = 5 seconds / 24 crests T = 0.21 seconds / crest

End of Week Procedures: 1.Add up all the points you got this week 2.Put the total number of points at the top of your page (out of 38 points) 3.List any dates you were absent or tardy (and why) 4.Make sure your name and period # is on the top of the page 5.Turn in your papers
