Entry-level Inter-professional Education: Perceptions of Physical and Occupational Therapists In Ontario Rachel Klingler B.Sc.(Hons)OT Reg.OT(Ont.) MScPT Candidate 3rk7@qlink.queensu.ca Investigators: Dan Mueller B.Sc.(Hons)PT Reg.PT(BC) MScPT Candidate 3dam2@qlink.queensu.ca

Our Project  A questionnaire sent to Ontario Occupational and Physical Therapists.  The questionnaire surveys the experiences and perceived interprofessional education needs of currently practicing therapists.

Rationale  While there has been much discussion and research regarding interprofessional education (IPE) in the last several years, there has been a lack of focus regarding the IPE needs of occupational and physical therapists (OT & PT).

Methods Questionnaire Design:  18 questions with a mix of matrix, multiple choice, yes / no, 5 point Likert, and open-ended formats  Designed to be completed online in less than 10 minutes  Posted on SurveyMonkey © website (professional membership obtained to allow for anticipated response rate)

Methods Distribution:  Link to questionnaire was sent out via email through:  PT & OT professional organization e-blasts  Email lists of Clinical Coordinators  Personal email lists of investigators and supervisors  Advertising leaflet with link also distributed via personal contact at Ontario Physiotherapy Association Conference in March 2007

Progress Report  Study is still in data collection phase until April 30 th, however so far we have received:  699 responses; of which:  343 OT  354 PT FYI: There are approximately 5,400 PTs and 3,500 OTs in Ontario

Results so Far It is important that occupational and physical therapy students be involved in inter-professional education during their training. Figure 1: Showing the distribution of responses to question #11 (text of question noted above). n=334 PTs, and 314 OTs

Results so Far Figure 2: Showing the distribution of responses to question #15 (“Where do you feel inter-professional education should primarily be done?”). n=334 PTs, and 314 OTs Common responses to the “other” category were:  “both”, “everywhere”, “all of the above”  case studies, and group learning modules

Results so Far I feel that entry-level students receive enough inter- professional education during their clinical placements. Figure 3: Showing the distribution of responses to question #16 (text of question noted above). n=334 PTs, and 314 OTs

Results so Far Common ideas mentioned:  Knowing each other’s roles, responsibilities, scope of practice, and skills  Case studies, team meetings, collaborative technique, shadowing other professions A participant quote: “Students should be able to describe the role of other professionals that they will be potentially dealing with after graduation so they are able to participate in effective teamwork.” Open-ended Question: In your opinion, what should be included in an interprofessional education program?

Results so Far Common ideas mentioned:  Interdisciplinary approach is essential  Students should receive as much interaction with other health professionals as possible A participant quote: IPE should “…facilitate understanding and respect amongst health professionals”. Open-ended Question: Do you have any other comments regarding interprofessional education?
