5 Cell membrane defines cell Cell membrane separates cell from aqueous environment – Thin = 8nm thick Controls transport in & out of the cell – Some substances cross more easily than others hydrophobic (nonpolar) vs. hydrophilic (polar) Small vs. big.

6 Cell membrane must be more than lipids… In 1972, S.J. Singer & G. Nicolson proposed that membrane proteins are inserted into the phospholipid bilayer It’s like a fluid… It’s like a mosaic… It’s the Fluid Mosaic Model!

7 Fluidity of the membrane Fluid mosaic model – Mosaic because of inclusion of proteins and carbohydrates along with the lipids – Fluid because the lipids and proteins are able to move laterally (left to right) throughout the membrane Fluidity changes with temperatures When the temp. gets low enough, the membrane solidifies – Permeability changes and proteins may become inactive

8 Membranes become semi-permeable via proteins – Allow specifc materials to move across the membrane – specific channels in various proteins allow specific material across cell membrane inside cell outside cell sugaraa H2OH2O salt NH 3 Hydrophobic (nonpolar) molecules, such as hydrocarbons, can dissolve in the lipid bilayer and pass through the membrane rapidly Polar molecules, such as sugars, do not cross the membrane easily

12 Membrane Proteins Proteins determine membrane’s specific functions – Every membrane in a cell has a unique collection of proteins Classes of membrane proteins: – peripheral proteins loosely bound to surface of membrane ex: cell surface identity marker (antigens) – integral proteins penetrate lipid bilayer, across whole membrane “transmembrane” protein ex: transport proteins – channels, permeases (pumps)

14 Membrane carbohydrates Play a key role in cell-cell recognition – ability of a cell to distinguish one cell from another antigens – important in organ & tissue development – basis for rejection of foreign cells by immune system

15 Membrane carbohydrates may be covalently bonded to lipids (forming glycolipids) or more commonly to proteins (forming glycoproteins) Carbohydrates on the external side of the plasma membrane vary among species, individuals, and even cell types in an individual

16 Sidedness of Membranes Membranes have distinct inside and outside faces The asymmetrical distribution of proteins, lipids, and associated carbohydrates in the plasma membrane is determined when the membrane is built by the ER and Golgi apparatus
