1.3 Levels of Organization (p44 - 47)

Levels of Organization Multi-celled Organisms have different levels of organization: Organelles  Cells  Tissues  Organs  Organ systems  Organisms So we have looked at cells, next is tissues.

Tissues Groups of cells working together form tissues. There are four basic types of tissue in the human body. i) Muscle ii) Epithelial iii) Connective iv) Nervous

1. Muscle Tissue Enables body parts to move, exert force, or change shape. There are three types of muscle tissue: –Skeletal: part of the skeleton, movement –Smooth: stomach, intestine, change shape –Cardiac: heart, beats to move blood.

2. Epithelial Tissue Covers the external and internal body surfaces. Includes skin and linings of stomach, intestine and glands which produce hormones, enzymes and sweat Primary purpose  protection.

3. Connective Tissue Strengthens, supports, or connects cells and tissues. Forms blood Stores fat Fills empty spaces

4. Nervous Tissue Senses, conducts, stores and transmits information.

Organs and Organ Systems Groups of tissue work together to form organs, which work together in organ systems. An organ is made up of different tissues working together to perform a specific task. Contains at least 2 different kinds of tissue.

Organ Systems A group of organs that interact with each other to perform a common task. There are 11 different organ systems in the human body.
