2 Inadvertent Whistle Rules Apply (4-1-2-b) 4-1-3-k: a live ball not in player possession touches anything inbounds other than a player, a player’s equipment, an official, an official’s equipment or the ground. 4-1-3-m: the ball becomes illegal through play.

4 Inadvertent Whistle When (4-1-2-b-1 & 2) Ball is in player possession or Loose from: a)A fumble, b)Backward pass or c)Illegal forward pass. Team in possession may: 1.Put the ball in play where declared dead, or 2.Repeat the down.

5 Ball loose from a fumble. Team in possession may have the ball at spot where possession was lost, or replay the down.

6 Team B may have the ball at the dead-ball spot, or replay the down.

7 Ball loose from a backward pass. Team in possession may have the ball at the spot where possession was lost, or replay the down.

8 Team in possession may have the ball at the dead-ball spot, or replay the down. Extend the period.

9 Inadvertent Whistle During (4-1-2-b-3) A legal forward pass or Free or scrimmage kick. Return ball to previous spot and repeat the down.

10 Inadvertent whistle during the pass. Return to the previous spot and replay.

11 Ball is loose from a scrimmage kick. Return to the previous spot and replay.

12 Inadvertent Whistle (4-1-2-b-4) After Team B gains possession on the try or during an extra period.  Don’t do this one. Put the whistle in your pocket. The try is over or the extra-period possession series is ended.

13 During a try or extra period. Try or extra-period possession series is ended.

14 A Foul Occurs During Any of the Previous (4-1-2-c) “…the penalty shall be administered as in any other play situation.” That is, if the penalty is refused, the result of the play is the inadvertent whistle.

15 A.R. 4-1-2 II 4 th and 16 at the 50-yard line. At the snap B1 is offside. Team A advances the ball to the 30-yard line and fumbles. During the loose ball, an inadvertent whistle is sounded.

16 50 4030 A.R. 4-1-2 II 4 th & 16 A runs to the 30 and fumbles. Inadvertent whistle while the ball is loose. B offside. Ruling: A may replay the down or refuse the penalty and have the ball on the 30, 1 st & 10.

17 A.R. 4-1-2 I 4 th and 16 at the 50-yard line, Team A kicks. B1 clips on Team B’s 40-yard line, and B2 muffs the kick on the 25-yard line. While the ball is loose, an inadvertent whistle is sounded.

19 Scrimmage Kick Play Defined (2-30-3) “A scrimmage kick play is the interval from the time between the snap and when a scrimmage kick comes into player possession or the ball is declared dead by rule.”

20 Penalty Enforcement for Scrimmage Kick Plays (2-25-10-e) “The basic spot on legal kick plays before a change of possession is the previous spot.”

21 Post Scrimmage Kick (10-2-3) Applies only to Team B and only under the following conditions: 1.Not during a try, successful field goal, or in extra periods. 2.Ball crosses the neutral zone. 3.Foul is three yards or more beyond the neutral zone. 4.Foul occurs before the end of the kick. 5.Team B will next put the ball in play.

22 50 4030 A.R. 4-1-2 I 4 th & 16 B clips on the 40. B muffs at the 25 and an inadvertent whistle while the ball is loose. A punts. Ruling: A may replay the down or accept the penalty; penalize B from the 50, and have the ball 1 st & 10 at the 35. K 25
