Golf is a precision club-and-ball sport, in which competing players (or golfers), using many types of clubs, attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course while employing the fewest number of strokes. Golf was an Olympic sport in the years 1900-1904. Again, it will regain this status in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The true origins of golf as a sport are not clear. One version assumes that the discipline comes from Scotland from the late Middle Ages. The rules of golf today are the same as those which were invented in Scotland. What is certain is that the sport is called the word "golf" was banned by the Parliament of Scotland in the fifteenth century. Some scientists, however, recognize that such a prohibition in force for a game similar to shinta or berlina, resembling more modern field hockey rather than golf. The oldest golf course in the world is Old Links al Musselburgh Racecourse. There is a certificate which proves that golf has grown 1,672 years, and Mary I Stuart, Queen of Scotland, was charmed with it as early as 1567. The word "golf„ derives from the Dutch word "kolf" meaning stick, club, stick

In the Anglo-Saxon countries golf is one of the most popular sports. Golf as a sport is almost 100% dominated by professional players, who live with their practice - as is the case with tennis. The best golfers are among the highest paid athletes in the world. Their income is much higher than tennis players income, and is closer to the earnings of professional basketball and football players.

Golf is a sport for everyone, although it requires physical fitness and a decent condition (during one round of golf, the average golfer who wears his own golf bag, burns up to 2500 kcal). Nevertheless, it can be practiced, both by 70-year-old man and 10- year-old kid. Going through all the holes in the field usually takes 4 to 6 hours, during which you stay all the time on fresh air and exercise - mostly of walk about 6-8 km along with weighing several kilograms bag of sticks.

Golf is often considered as a very elite sport, which is only practiced by rich people. In the countries where the sport is very popular (U.S., Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, Sweden, Japan, Iceland, Czech Republic), it is quite easily accessible to almost anyone who really wants to play. Passionate golf players usually belong to a particular club, whose members use the golf field together and take care of it. Club members normally form a kind of community, which shares the cost of maintaining the fields. A set of golf clubs with bag and cart or special shoes are expensive, but many golf clubs rent club, and special shoes are not needed in the beginning.

In countries where golf is not much popular, it is usually very expensive indeed, the main barrier is not financial cost of the acquisition of equipment, but the cost of using the field or the cost of membership fees at the club. In Poland, the high cost of field results from the provisions that treat the field as a sports facility, which disables the agricultural tax in favor of a much larger tax determined by the municipality. It is possible that in 2009 the law will be passed amending the status quo.
