3 DEFINITION  Health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship  Addresses physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals o Therapeutic music is NOT the same as music therapy IDEOLOGY  Uses music as a tool  ex. Organize emotions, regain motor skills, calm patients down, etc.  Specifically applied to aid patient(s) in a particular, scientifically determined way  Not simply playing music for patients

4 IN GENERAL  Autism: communication, motor skills, emotional/academic/cogn itive functions  Alzheimers: language recall, reduces depression, assess cognitive abilities  Crisis/Trauma: anxiety/stress reduction, confidence/control, relaxation, non-verbal emotional outlet  Young children: stimulates all senses, involves child in play/experience; both aid development STRESS  Reduced muscle tension, agitation/anxiety  Increased verbalization, motivation, concentration/attention span  Enhanced/improved interpersonal relationships, self-image/- esteem  Allows for self-expression both verbally and non- verbally  Develop coping/relaxation skills + independence and decision making skills  Awareness of self and environment

5 Example exercises/technologies:  Music improvisation and/or performance  Song writing/lyric discussion  Receptive music listening  Music and imagery  Singing therapy (speech applications)  VibroAcoustic therapy o Every treatment and session is personalized o Patient is assessed and music therapist designs treatment based on their needs o Techniques applied with specific outcome in mind
