Miroslav Vujic University of Zagreb Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences Zagreb, 10 October 2013 CIVITAS-ELAN 8.2. Public Transport Priority and Traveler Information

Presentation overview Measure objectives Implementation process Measure outcomes Lessions learned from the process CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic

Mesure objectives two key objectives: improvement of mobility for all vehicles by giving priority at intersections to public transport vehicles Improvement of public transport system quality in general What was done? Relevant data collected Micro and macro simulation models produced Implementation finished Evaluation of implementation CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic

Mesure objectives – cont. demonstration corridor: 3.2km long Savska street Connects the historic City centre (north) with south (entrance) of the City Traffic situation: bi-directional traffic personal vehicles and PT vehicles are operating in one (same) level CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic

Implementation process – Task No.1 Define PT performance indicators PT operation time Dwell time Intersection delay Speed per segment Operational speed Develop microsimulation model of existing traffic situation for the entire corridor PTV VISSIM software package Build traffic network Number and width of lanes Signal logic, etc. Calibrate developed model according to existing traffic situation CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic

Implementation process – Task No.2 Develop and define transit priority algorithms for every signalized intersection on the corridor Active priority techniques – detection of vehicles' presence Implement defined algorithms in simulation model PTV VISVAP module was used for defining and implementing priority algorithms Gather simulation results and evaluate benefits of transit priority implementation Evaluation based on defined PT performance indicators CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic

Implementation process – Task No.3 Implementation of PT priority techniques on 3 intersections on the corridor Hebrangova Street Dezeliceva Street Varsavska Street Priority technique: Early green is enabled if PT vehicle is detected (just northbound) Detection zone: 150m before the intersection Technical solutions: Commercial VECOM from Peek Traffic Experimental RFID solution CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic

Measure outcomes Simulation model results: PT priority defined and implemented in simulation on the whole corridor & all intersections Main performance indicator: average PT operation time 8,85% Not satisfied?! Observing time perspective: Before: 20,37min After: 18,42min 2,28min of benefit – one PT line per one hour! CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic

Measure outcomes – cont. CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic ObjectivesNeededAchieved Increase PT avg. speed2%6,9% Decrease avg. running time4%7,3% Decrease intersection delay3%17,84% Decrease no. of vehicles3%1,89%

Lessions learned from the process teamwork is essential! project leader must define schedules, boundaries and tasks for every researcher and involved partners! importance of the input traffic data traffic volumes, queue length, etc. needed for development of simulation model traffic modeling is crucial better communication and cooperation between partners CIVITAS-ELAN presentation, Miroslav Vujic
