Rollover Protective Structures; Overhead Protection OSHA Subpart W

Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Material Handling Equipment 1926.100 ROPS are needed for rubber- tired, self-propelled scrapers, rubber-tired dozers, wheel-type agricultural and industrial tractors, crawler tractors, crawler-type loaders, and motor graders Does not apply to side boom pipelaying tractors

Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Material Handling Equipment 1926.100 Equipment made on or after September 1, 1972 must have ROPS Equipment made before September 1, 1972 ROP must meet the minimum criteria set forth in 1926.1001 and 1926.1002. It must support at least twice the weight of the vehicle at any point of impact. 2x vehicle weight http://www.ritchiewiki.com/wi ki/files/Cat_D8H_with_A_Doze r_and_Winch.jpg

Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Material Handling Equipment 1926.1000 ROP must be designed to minimize the likelihood that the vehicle will completely roll over. It is to prevent the operator from being crushed in the event of a rollover Design shall provide a vertical clearance of at least 52 inches from the work deck to the ROPS at the point of ingress or egress V.S. http:// www.cdc.gov/ni osh/face/images/02ky085 a.jpg http://www.whbfd.com/photos/albums/userpics/10001/thumb_PA230049.jpg

Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Material Handling Equipment ROPS removed for any reason shall be remounted with equal quality or better; bolts or welding as required for the original mounting Each ROPS shall have the following information permanently affixed to the structure: Manufacturer or fabricator’s name and address ROPS model number, if any Machine make, model, or series number structure is designed to fit http://www.hsa.ie/images_upload/ROPS_label.jpg

Minimum Performance Criteria for ROP Structures for Designated Scrapers, Loaders, Dozers, Graders, and Crawler Tractors 1926.1001 Laboratory test must determine adequacy of structure used in the following conditions: Rubber tired self propelled scrapers, Rubber tired front end loaders, and Rubber tired dozers: operating up to 10mph, over hard clay, where rollover is limited to 360 degrees down a 30 degree slope Motor Graders: operating up to 10mph, over hard clay, where rollover is limited to 360 degrees down a 30 degree slope Crawler tractors or crawler-type loaders: operating up to 10mph, over hard clay, where rollover is limited to 360 degrees down a 45 degree slope http://www.escocorp.com/markets/hi ghway_construction/images/scraper.jp g Max 45 degrees

Facilities and apparatus The following material is necessary: Material, equipment, and tie down means adequate to insure that the ROPS and it vehicle frame absorb the applied energy Equipment necessary to measure and apply loads to the ROPS. Adequate means to measure deflections and lengths should also be provided. http://web.dcp.ufl.edu/hinze/OSHA-Subparts-U-Z.htm Required apparatus for all types of equipment
