Looking Four Ways at the Lord’s Supper 1 Corinthians 11:26-29

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.”

Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Just as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” bears witness to the death of a soldier for his country, the Supper proclaims the Lord’s death for mankind.

Looking Four Ways at the Lord’s Supper Look Without –“you proclaim the Lord’s death” (vs. 26) Look Forward –“till he comes” (vs. 26)

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep…”

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (cont.) “…For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.” Christians look forward to Christ’s coming

2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 “…And to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.” The unprepared dread his coming

2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.” The time of coming is uncertain, so we are to be watchful (cf. Matt. 25:13)

Matthew 25:13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”

Looking Four Ways at the Lord’s Supper Look Without –“you proclaim the Lord’s death” (vs. 26) Look Forward –“till he comes” (vs. 26) Look Within –“let a man examine himself” (vs. 28)

1 Corinthians 10:16 “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?” It is an individual act of worship; it is a communion of the Christian with Christ

Looking Four Ways at the Lord’s Supper Look Without –“you proclaim the Lord’s death” (vs. 26) Look Forward –“till he comes” (vs. 26) Look Within –“let a man examine himself” (vs. 28) Look Backward –“discerning the Lord’s body” (vs. 29)

Conclusion Remember the death of our Lord Mark 16:19-39
