2 © 2005 Pearson Education Inc., publishing as Longman Publishers Topics  A topic is the general subject matter of a reading passage.  The topic is who or what the passage is about.  The topic can be stated in one word or a few words.  What is the topic of this paragraph? Our truck makes everyday life easier. In our truck, we can haul furniture, tools, camping equipment, and even trash. Most often we fill its bed full of the equipment used by the girls in our daughter’s hockey team. It also provides room to haul home a month’s worth of groceries.

3 © 2005 Pearson Education Inc., publishing as Longman Publishers General and Specific Ideas  A general idea is a broad subject that needs specific ideas to support or explain it.  A specific idea is a point used to support or explain a general idea.  A skilled reader is able to see the difference between general and specific ideas.

One insurance company states that of all injury claims filed, at least one third are related to dog bites. Any dog may be capable of biting. Even the well-loved family dog can suddenly turn into a biter for no known reasons. The most common breeds to bite are chows, cocker spaniels, pit bulls, and rottweilers.
