3 History The name Arizona comes from the O'odham Indian word for “little spring”. The first European visitor to the state was a Spanish Franciscan friar named Marcos de Niza in 1539. He was searching for the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. Arizona has a colorful history full of old West legends such as Geronimo and Cochise. The Gunfight ar the O.K. Corral took place in Tombstone. Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912, becoming the 48 th state.

4 Demographics Population- The population of Arizona in 2010 was 6,392,017 Male: 3,175,823 (49.9%); Female: 3,216,194 (50.1%). White: 4,667,121 (57.8%); Black: 259,008 (4.1%); American Indian: 296,529 (4.6%); Asian: 176,695 (2.8%);Other race: 761,716 (11.9%); Two or more races: 218,300 (3.4%); Hispanic/Latino: 1,895,149 (29.6%). 2010 population 18 and over: 4,763,003; 65 and over: 881,831; median age: 35.0.

5 Interesting Facts 1.Arizona’s state motto is Ditat Deus, which means God Enriches. 2.The state bird of Arizona is the cactus wren. 3.Part of the 4 Corners region along with Utah, Colorado and New Mexico 4.Phoenix is the capital. 5.Twelve indian tribes live in the state. In addition to the Navajo, they include Mohave, Apache, Hopi, Paiute, Tohono O'Odham, Pima, Maricopa, Yavapaí, Hualapai, and Havasupai. 6.The Arizona Cardinals (NFL) Phoenix Suns (NBA), Phoenix Coyotes (NHL) and Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB) are the professional sports teams in the state.

6 Places to Visit Grand Canyon National Park is located in the northern part of Arizona. It is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.
