1 6-2 Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

2 Division in Eukaryotes
Two types of Cell Division for eukaryotes: Mitosis and Meiosis

3 Mitosis (Division of the nucleus)
Occurs in organisms undergoing growth, development, and repair One cell division Makes 2 new cells identical to the original cell Makes somatic cells Makes diploid cell (2n)

4 Meiosis Meiosis (gamete production) = Occurs during the reproduction of gametes (sex cells) Two cell divisions makes 4 new cells with half the genetic material of the original Makes sex cells Makes haploid cells (n)

6 Cell Cycle Cell Cycle = A repeating cycle of events in the life of a cell

7 Cell Cycle Interphase = the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases)

8 Cell Cycle Interphase = the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases) G1 = the growth phase, a new cell grows to mature size S = DNA is copied or synthesized to prepare for division G2 = the time when the cell prepares for division

9 Cell Cycle Optional**) G0 = following G1 a cell can exit the cell cycle and prevent further cell division Ex/ Developed nerve cells enter G0 so nerve cells can not divide to repair damage

10 Mitosis Phases Mitosis divides the cell’s nucleus in four phases.
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase

11 Mitosis Phases 1. Prophase: Chromosomes condense, nucleus breaks down, and spindle fibers form

12 Mitosis Phases 2. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell

13 Mitosis Phases 3. Anaphase: sister chromatids separate to opposite sides of the cell.

14 Mitosis Phases 4. Telophase: The new nuclei form, spindle fibers break down, and chromosomes begin to uncoil.

15 Mitosis Phases Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm

16 Sequence of Cell Cycle G1 S  G2 M (Mitosis) C (Cytokinesis)
INTERPHASE CELL DIVISION
