1 Running Moulds

2 Learning Outcomes To be able to identify members of the running mouldTo be able to identify members of the running mould Describe a cornice mouldDescribe a cornice mould Raise awareness of the hanging mouldRaise awareness of the hanging mould

3 All mouldings consists of members these are a combinations of curved and straight lines. Each member is separated by a straight sections known as fillet. Ovolo The word Ovolo means convex or a quarter rounds. In order to draw this member the compass must be placed here. Cavetto The word Cavetto means concave. In order to draw this member the compass must be placed here.

4 A A B Cyma Recta The word Cyma means moulding of double curvature. When the concave part is the uppermost it is called cyma recta. In order to draw this member the compass must be placed in two locations A, B. Cyma Reversa When the convex part is at the top it is called the cyma reversa. In order to draw this member the compass must be placed in two locations A, B. B

5 Torus This word Torus means Convex semi – circular moulding. In order to draw this member the compass must be placed here. Scotia This word Scotia means Concave moulding with the lower edge projecting beyond the top. In order to draw this member the compass must be placed in two locations A, B. A B

6 The projection The distance the cornice mould projects from the ceiling angle to the nib of the mould is known as the projection. The Depth The distance from the ceiling angle to the slipper is known as the depth. The Cornice Mould The cornice is the moulding that runs between the ceiling and the wall and it provides a break between two surfaces. The cornice is the most predominant of all the moulding and is often referred to as crown moulding.

10 The Hanging Mould Lintel Template Stock Running Rule Slipper and Rabbit Plaster Face Side Brace Hanging moulds are used for the undersides of beams and other larger decorative mouldings. It is recommended that the moulds be made much stronger than normal and also it is better to use a hanging mould to reduce the stress downwards on the plaster.

11 Peg Mould A mould run on a curved rule is known as a peg mould.  An Elliptical Arch can also be run with a peg mould.  In order to do this you must build a timber template and fix it in the middle of the Arch.  The Peg Mould can then ride on the timber template and form the elliptical arch. 12 12 The stock will provide strength for the template and is fixed in the centre of the slipper. Before fixing securely, ensure that the stock is square to the slipper. The Slipper is the next piece to be constructed. This will be the piece that will run along the running rules and carry the stock. It is very important that the Slipper is a very flat piece of timber that will not warp. The last piece of timber to be attached is: The Brace, this will provide strength and keep the stock square to the slipper. The template The Template is the first part of the running mould to be construct is the template sometime called the profile; these are normally made of zinc, or aluminium or soft metal that will be easy to work.

13 The panel mould is used mainly for running panel or dado mould. It can be attached to a gig stick for running circular or curved work. The template is made from either zinc or aluminium. The stock can be made of 3/4 ply wood. The slipper should be made of good quality 4x1 soft wood. The Panel Mould. Stock Template Gig Stick Brace Slipper
