Physical Education Assessment

The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity. Each Student In Physical Education will be graded on the following criteria: 40% AFFECTIVE 20% COGNITIVE 20% PSYCHOMOTOR 20% FITNESS

40% AFFECTIVE Character Cooperation Sportsmanship Interest Class Conduct Students will be closely observed for their ability to interact cooperatively with their classmates during all class activities. Demonstrate Positive decision-making Acceptable social and personal behavior Participate in a safe and cooperative manner *During all physical activity settings* Active participation is required to demonstrate this learning.

20% COGNITIVE Knowledge of the rules and the skills of each activity. Students may be asked to express this knowledge in writing, orally, or during an instructional phase of a lesson. The student will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of: Principles Concepts Strategies Techniques Rules Related to the Physical Education topic or activity. Active participation is required to demonstrate this learning.

20% PSYCHOMOTOR Psychomotor is the performance of the skills of each activity. Assess a student’s ability to correctly perform a skill or technique. Improvement in the performance of these skills also plays a part in the assessment. Skills can be evaluated while completing specific, structured skill tests or while participating in game – like situations. Demonstrate a high level of competence in: Basic and complex moves Skills and techniques in the performance or playing situation. The student selects, adapts and creates a wide range of aesthetic moves that are appropriate to the requirements of the task. Active participation is required to demonstrate this learning.

20% FITNESS The Fitness component will measure improvement in any fitness activity selected after a baseline has been established. An active dynamic warm up will be implemented daily in all class activities and will be a critical component of the fitness grade. The student will be highly engaged in all aspects of the fitness lesson, and actively engaged in all flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular exercises during dynamic warm-ups and all fitness activities.

Performs at a very high level for the duration of the activity Demonstrates and successfully executes all required skills to complete the activity. Evidence of a well thought out strategy is clearly demonstrated during the activity. Recognizes his/her capabilities and limitations as well as those of others and assumes supportive or leadership role as the situation may dictate. Demonstrates an excellent understanding and knowledge of the rules. Demonstrates personal and social responsibility in physical activity settings at all times. Executes all required PE procedures with little or no prompting. A

Evidence of a strategy is demonstrated during the activity. Usually recognizes his/her capabilities and limitations as well as those of others and sometimes assumes supportive or leadership role as the situation may dictate. Demonstrates a good understanding and knowledge of the rules. Demonstrates personal and social responsibility in physical activity settings most of the time. Executes most of the required PE procedures with some prompting. B

Performs at a moderate level for the duration of the activity Demonstrates and successful executes some of the required skills of the activity. Evidence of a strategy is sometimes demonstrated during the activity. Sometimes recognizes his/her capabilities and limitations as well as those of others and rarely assumes supportive or leadership role as the situation may dictate. Demonstrates a fair understanding and knowledge of the rules. Demonstrates personal and social responsibility in physical activity settings some of the time. Executes some of the required PE procedures but needs repeated prompting. C

Performs at a minimal level for the duration of the activity. Rarely demonstrates or successful executes some of the required skills of the activity. Evidence of a strategy is rarely demonstrated during the activity. Rarely recognizes his/her capabilities and limitations as well as those of others and does not assume supportive or leadership role as the situation may dictate. Demonstrates a poor understanding and knowledge of the rules. Rarely demonstrates personal and social responsibility in physical activity settings. Executes few of the required PE procedures and frequently needs repeated prompting. D

UNPREPARED POLICY Physical education is essentially an activity based, participation course. You must be in class, and prepared to participate, in order to be successful. Unprepared marks will only affect the marking period final grade and not the unit grade

Unprepared students who choose to sit out and observe class, lose the privilege to make up that class since they are present during the instructional phase of the prescribed activity. Students who are unprepared for class will lose the privilege to make up class and lose points accordingly: 1st unprepared (- 3 points) 2nd unprepared (- 10 points) 3rd unprepared (- 20 points) 4th unprepared (- 30 points) 5th unprepared (- 40 points) These points will be subtracted from the student’s final average at the end of the marking period

CUTS Students who cuts class will also lose the privilege to make up class and lose points accordingly: 1st cut (-10) 2nd cut (-20) 3rd cut (-30) 4th cut (-40) 5th cut (-50) These points will be subtracted from the student’s final average at the end of the marking period

ABSENCES Students who miss Physical Education for a non-credit absence should make up the work. One non-credit absence will be allowed per unit before a student is required to make up missed Physical Education classes. Make ups are available for non-credit absences. Students can make up classes by attending make-up classes, Make Up for Physical Education Offered Thursday’s from 2:45pm – 3:15pm for Marking Period 1 and 4 on the Track and for Marking periods 2 and 3 in the Fitness Center. Points Subtracted for each absence 5 points will be deducted from the student’s final unit grade for each Non-Credit absence after 1st Non-Credit absence is recorded.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION MEDICAL EXCUSE PROCEDURE Students medically excused for more than half the days of a unit must submit a typed report(s) to their Physical Education grading and/or activity teacher in order to receive credit for Physical Education. Each typed report will represent an entire unit. Those excused for part of this time will discuss with their teacher what is required for the missing time.
