According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship Why Does Your Church Celebrate Like It Does? Or “The Eucharist”

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship First Question: Why do you have the Lord’s Supper each and every week? Once a quarter is nice. Once a month is fine. But every week? Sometimes twice?

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship The earliest, yes, the Biblical Church, had Communion, The Lord’s Supper, the Holy Eucharist every time they gathered together.

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship The earliest, yes, the Biblical Church, had Communion, The Lord’s Supper, the Holy Eucharist every time they gathered together. The best place to witness this is in St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian Church.

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship St. Paul chastises the Corinthians for their various factions, arguing that the Corinthians are using their divisiveness to assert superiority over one another. They bring their own food and drink to Church and party on their own! St. Paul uses this as a spring board to talk about the Holy Eucharist. In regards to this, St. Paul says,

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship “Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you.”

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship “Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper. For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk. What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.” I Corinthians 11:17-22

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship After recounting the events of the Last Supper as it had been told to him, St. Paul concludes by showing the importance of the Eucharistic celebration: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” I Corinthians 11:23-26

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship Why it is so important requires a bit more work. St. Paul also tells us, “Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us.” (I Corinthians 5:7) This puts us in mind that Jesus in our Passover and the Passover was the single-most important event in the history of the Jewish people.

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship The L ORD told Moses, “ So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the L ORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.” (Exodus 12:14)

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship The L ORD told Moses, “ So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the L ORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.” (Exodus 12:14) Of course, the Passover was instituted as a foretaste of the Crucifixion so that we would understand the full significance. That’s why they did it continuously. That’s why we do it the same.

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship Question: Why is the Holy Eucharist so important?

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.” John 6:53-57

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship Question: So what makes you think that the bread and wine are actually solve this issue?

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Luke 22:19 See also Matthew 26:26; Mark 14:22; and I Corinthians 11:24

According to the Scriptures: The Biblical Basis for Our Worship Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew :26:27-28 See Also: Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20; I Corinthians 11:25
