1 Leonardo DaVinci By Joseph Ordillas  Born April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy  Died on May 5, 1519  The name, DaVinci, simply means from Vinci

2 Leonardo DaVinci was a famous Renaissance man. He was a sculptor, architect, inventor, engineer, town planner and mapmaker, as well as an expert painter.  He painted the Mona Lisa, one of his most famous paintings  Trained to be a painter  He studied anatomy, astronomy, botany, geology, geometry and optics

3 The Duke and the Duchess  In 1482, he became the court artist for the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza  Later in 1499, when he visited Mantua, a city in Italy. There, he made a famous drawing for the Duchess of Mantua, Isabella d’Este.

4 The Last Supper  During Leonardo’s years in Milan, he created a famous wall painting called The Last Supper.  The Last Supper is the event in which Jesus ate with his friends one last time before being betrayed by one of his own, Judas.

6 Scientific Studies  DaVinci used drawings for 2 things: a tool for scientific investigation and an expression of artistic imagination. He was interested in the science of motion and force also known as mechanics. He drew plans for aircraft like a helicopter and a parachute. When studying anatomy, Leonardo dissected human corpses and the bodies of animals.

9 Paintings  In the early 1500’s, Leonardo made 2 paintings: Mona Lisa and The Virgin and Child With Saint Anne. Some of his paintings were religious, like John the Baptist, Saint, The Last Supper, and Jesus Christ.  Some of Leonardo’s paintings are considered to be the first accurate portrayals of the human anatomy.  Leonardo was interested in optics, which is considered with the properties of light. He carefully analyzed such things as the pattern of light and shadow on a sphere before a window.

11 Leonardo’s Importance  Leonardo had one of the greatest scientific minds of the Italian Renaissance. He wanted to know the workings of what he saw in nature. Many of his inventions and scientific ideas were centuries ahead of his time.

12 Incomplete Project  Although Leonardo was a great artist, he didn’t have the time to complete one of his projects. This certain project was a church altarpiece also known as the Adoration of the Kings.

14  Leonardo DaVinci was considered a Renaissance man because he had many interests such as art, science, mathematics, life and humanism.
