2 ISDH Conditions  Cooperative client  Warm hand - rub or massage  Light (same as to read)  Clean place to lay out supplies

3 ISDH Universal Precautions  Lead equipment should not be used for other tests.  All lead equipment should be kept in a dust-proof container.  Try to avoid touching equipment when transferring it into the dust-proof container.  Use powder free gloves (or be sure to rid gloves from any powder).  Wash hands before and after procedure!

4 ISDH Bloodborne Pathogens Training

5 ISDH Supplies Required  Latex or Vinyl gloves (2)  Alcohol on cotton, Alcohol Prep, acetone, soap, or hand sanitizer  Lancet – retractable  Sharps container  Collection device  Trash container

6 ISDH Supplies Good to Have  Table cover  Band Aid, cotton ball, or 2x2 gauze  Clean surfaces – Lysol, Clorox, etc  Clean up packet not necessary

7 ISDH Steps  Clean work area – cover if possible  Supplies available – remove cap from microvette tube  Gloves  Clean clients finger – can reuse cotton  Stick – side of finger pad– press firmly  Lancet in sharps container  Collect blood in tube and cap – place in safe area  Stop bleeding – if any  Clean area

8 ISDH Safety Concerns  If you have an accidental stick with the used lancet – follow employer’s policy.  You have only a few hours to get medication into your mouth.  Transport and dispose of sharps container according to employer’s policy.
