1 Analysis and Meaning of Samvatsari Pratikraman
4/15/2017 Analysis and Meaning of Samvatsari Pratikraman Anop R. Vora Rochester, NY Most members of our community go through the Pratikraman ritual at least once a year either because of deep faith in the religion or tradition or for whatever other reason. This is indeed very positive. I do not know of any other religion where the procedure for repentance and atonement is so nicely structured. The problem we are facing is that a vast majority of our community goes through this ritual without understanding a word of it. We are a very highly educated and intelligent community. We need to develop better appreciation of the ritual and get more mileage from it. Any ritual we perform must touch our heart and must impact our innermost sentiments and feelings. The presentation you are about to hear is a humble attempt to increase your understanding and awareness of the most important ritual in our religion.

3 Introduction Reasons for the Presentation
4/15/2017 Introduction Reasons for the Presentation Performing any ritual without understanding its meaning has a very limited benefit. Awareness is the key to spiritual success. Goals To improve understanding of the Pratikraman Ritual at the macro level. To help improve one’s thought pattern and behavior In my humble opinion, performing any religious ritual without understanding its meaning has a very limited benefit. The ritual can change us from within and elevate us spiritually only if we are aware of what we are doing. This awareness can also motivate us to dig deeper and make us grow further. Please remember understanding and awareness are the critical factors that influence us in the way we think and behave. Because of the time limitations, I will not be able to translate the sutras line by line. I will give general meaning of the most of the sutras to spark your interest. Hopefully, this will be only the beginning of the learning process.

4 Generic Meaning of Pratikraman
4/15/2017 Generic Meaning of Pratikraman It Means To Come Back To retreat from the worldly sins To get away from the tendency of Finding fault in others, criticizing others and to develop the habit of self analysis, self improvement, and introspection Repentance/atonement The generic meaning of Pratikraman is to come closer to our real self and experience divine qualities such as compassion, equanimity, humility, forgiveness and others. It also means to retreat from the worldly sins. The ritual gives us a constant reminder of where we might be erring. In addition, the ritual is designed to serve as a vehicle for repentance, atonement, self improvement and introspection. It could indeed be a great tool if we only knew its potential.

5 Types of Pratikramans Devsi(Evening) Raisi(Morning) Pakkhi (Fortnight)
4/15/2017 Types of Pratikramans Devsi(Evening) Raisi(Morning) Pakkhi (Fortnight) Chaumasi(4 mos.) Samvatsari (year) There are 5 different types of Pratikramans based on the frequency. Every Jain is supposed to perform a Pratikraman at least once a year.

6 Different Formats /Traditions
4/15/2017 Different Formats /Traditions Pratikramans composed in Prakrit/Sanskrit/Gujarati/Hindi Pratikramans composed in English (JAINA (Narendra Sheth), Dr. Surendra Singhavi, Dr. Mukesh Doshi, Pravin K. Shah, Manubhai Doshi) FORAMTS Pratikramans are available in different languages. Old sutras were written in Ardha Magadhi in the times of Lord Mahavira. Later on Some Sutras were written in Sanskrit. More recently, Pratikramans have been composed in Hindi, Gujarati, and English. The English version is being continuously refined. JAINA came up with the English format in 1992, Pravin Shah of NC in 1997, Dr. Surendra Sanghavi in Pravin is refining the old version, Manubhai Doshi is in the process of coming up another version, Dr. Mukesh Doshi is using a modified version of Pravin’s format. All English formats are about an hour long. TRADITIONS I was brought up as Swetamber Murtipujak in Vallabhipur/Bhavnagar area and therefore my presentation is heavily slanted towards that tradition. IN the spirit of Anekantwad & as a sign of respect, I would like to show the traditions followed by other sects as well. Please correct me if I make any mistakes in presenting their traditions because I do not wish to hurt any one’s feelings.

Santikaram is one of them. It starts with a prayer to Lord Shantinath. Most of the stanzas reflect an appeal to heavenly gods/goddesses to look after Jain sangh for its well being.

36 Sansardava Composed by Haribhadrasuri about 1400 yrs. ago
4/15/2017 Sansardava Composed by Haribhadrasuri about 1400 yrs. ago Stanza-1: Prayer to Lord Mahavir Stanza-2: Worship all Tirthankaras Stanza-3: Pay respect to Scriptures Stanza-4: Pay respect to SHRUTDEVI (GODDESS OF KNOWLEDGE) Note: Last 3 lines were composed and are therefore sung by Sangh.

4/15/2017 Macro Structure Atichar Vandittu (2) Long Kausagg Samayik Beginning Devsi Begin Samvatasari Guru Vandana Pachkhhan Chaityavandan Nammuthunam Devsi End Samayik Ending Ending thought while concluding Samayik: Remember Pratikraman is a SADHAN (TOOL), Samayik is SADHYA (GOAL). We are supposed to stay in SAMAYIK 24 hours a day!! This means 3 hours of Samvatsari Pratikraman is too short!! Is the use of phrase “ I apologize” a form of Pratikraman? Yes, if we really mean it. If we engage mind, speech, and body when we use this phrase and if we have truly repented our act ; then we have indeed performed a Pratikraman. In reality, this does not happen. We say we apologize, but we do not mean it. This is where JAINISM goes very deep. Hypocrisy has no place in this great region. Ajit Shanti Brahat Shanti Santikaram

41 Translation of frequently used Prakrit words
4/15/2017 Translation of frequently used Prakrit words Koha, Mana, Maya, Lobha Na Karemi, Na Karavemi Nan, Dansan, Charitta, Samai, Gutti cha, pi, mae Vandami, Nindami, Garihami Mansa, Vayasa, Kayasa Matthaen Vandami Krodh, man, maya, lobh (Anger, Arrogance, Deception, Greed); Na Karemi (I will not do a sinful act.), Na Karavemi ( I will not get it done through others.), Nan (Gyan-Knowledge), Danshan ( Darshan, perception), Charitta ( Charitra, conduct), Samai ( Samati-Carefulness), Gutti ( Gupti- control of mind, speech and body), Cha (and), Pi (and others), mae( by me), Vandami (I bow down), Nindami ( I censure my sinful acts.), Garihami ( I do so in front of Guru), Mansa, Vayasa, Kayasa (through mind, speech, and body), Mathhaen Vandami (( I bow down with my head.)

42 Observations Repetition of sutras several times
4/15/2017 Observations Repetition of sutras several times Detailed description of code of conduct-activities have changed, motives have not. Effective way to purify one self Religion principles are weaved into daily life. Jain Religion is not just an abstraction. Several sutras have been repeated many times: Navakar Mantra (240 times), Vandana (16), Annath (15), Vandittu (3), Logass (15) The repetition has been the key feature of many Asian religions including Hinduism and Jainism. Perhaps the idea is to reinforce the message until it brings out a lasting change in a person’s behavior. Pratikraman of any type describes the code of conduct expected of a true Jain. Specific activities may have changed with the passage of time but the motives have not. For example: people were lying 2500 years ago and they still do through different activities –perhaps in more sophisticated ways-but the message of truth has not changed. Pratikraman is one of the effective ways to purify oneself. If the ritual is done on a regular basis, it should serve as a constant reminder for the right behavior. Jain religion is not a theory. Nor is an abstraction. It is indeed a way of life.

43 Observations..contd ******************************* MICHHA MI DUKKADAM
4/15/2017 Observations..contd Jain prayers are decidedly not for wealth, power, fame or other worldly things. Emphasis is on humility, introspection, and forgiveness and other divine qualities ******************************* MICHHA MI DUKKADAM (I BEG FOR YOUR FORGIVENESS.) Jain prayers are not for money, power, fame or other wordly gains. The people who go through this ritual for any of these reasons may get a rude awakening. In Pratikraman ritual, the underlying message is the development of humility, introspection, forgiveness and other divine qualities. Let us all do our very best to bring out these qualities and move on to the path of liberation.
