4 Local Telework Data In Minnesota, 130,560 (4.8% ) work from home. In Otter Tail Co, 1,587 (5.9%) work from home Source: American Community Survey (2005-2009) In Fergus Falls, we can estimate roughly 1,000 or more people may telecommute or drive more than 50 miles. 5 Where Fergus Falls residents work Each dot shows where Fergus Falls residents go to work. Caveat: Fergus Falls city shown as base area, so it’s possible for Otter Tail County residents to commute to these regions in greater amounts.

6 Where Fargo-Moorhead workers live Each dot shows where Fargo workers live. Caveat: Fargo-Moorhead employer headquarters shown as base area, so it’s possible for branch offices in “hot spot” communities.

7 Telework Trends GROWING - As of 2008, almost 34 million Americans worked outside the office at least part-time; it was just a few million in 1990. (WorldAt Work, Human Resources Association) HEALTHY WORKPLACE - The telework option was among the responses explored by companies to the H1N1 virus outbreak. Companies that have networks of home workers could continue productivity when competitors have fallen ill. (Mpls Business Journal, Sept. 2009) ENVIRONMENT - Telecommuting includes reduction in highway congestion, reduced emission of pollutants, as well as savings in energy and petroleum consumption.. (Inquirer, Sept. 2007)

8 Telework Trends QUALITY OF LIFE – Roughly a third of Americans would prefer to live in rural areas that “epitomize traditional values of family, religion, and self-sufficiency and as being more attractive, friendly and safe, particularly for children. (WorldAt Work, Human Resources Association) BRAIN DRAIN VS BRAIN GAIN - Young adults may be leave for education and opportunities, but the growth patterns in rural Minnesota counties show increases in the 30-to-49 year ages. (Ben Winchester, U of M Extension) 100 MILLION BY 2050 - In order to accommodate the next 100 million Americans, new environmentally friendly technologies and infrastructures will be required to reduce commutes by bringing work closer to – or even into – the home… (Joel Kotkin “Next 100 Million: America in 2050”)
