1. SSUSH6 The student will analyze the impact of territorial expansion and population growth and the impact of this growth in the early decades of the new nation.

2. c. Explain major reasons for the War of 1812 and the war’s significance on the development of a national identity.

3. War of 1812 Started with U.S. settlers wanting to move west but encountered Native American resistance. Start was on June 18,1812.Congress declares war on Great Britain. Began with many in the United States hoping to win land from the British and Canada.

4. Keep fighting!! Though it looked bleak at the beginning, after the British set fire to Washington, D.C, the United States prevailed beginning with a win at Fort McHenry! The United States was able to hold off many British attacks and ultimately won the battle. This inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner( which is today’s National anthem)

5. National Identity What happens when you have defeated a “giant” in your life? The U.S. citizens started to feel a great sense of pride in defeating the almighty British. Another advantage of the war was the U.S. grew in manufacturing and agriculture improved and grew prosperous. U.S. citizens had established themselves as a major player in domestic and international trade.

6. d. Describe the construction of the Erie Canal, the rise of New York City, and the development of the nation’s infrastructure

7. Erie Canal Canal- man-made waterways meant to make travel faster. The canal provided a new shipping route from Lake Erie to the Hudson River. How would this help New York city grow as a commercial center? What other advantage would this canal help with? (think transportation)

9. In New York!! The establishment of textile mills( factory that makes clothing and fabrics) by 1814 in New York helped revolutionize the city. New York’s ports made it a major center for shipping and trade. Who else do you think benefited from the city’s growth? As a result from all of this the city’s population, industries, and ethnic diversity grew incredibly during the years following the War of 1812.

10. e. Describe the reasons for and importance of the Monroe Doctrine

11. Monroe Doctrine After the War of 1812 the United States entered into a period known as the “Era of Good Feelings.” During this time James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine in 1823. This doctrine said that the U.S. would NOT tolerate European intervention in the affairs of any independent nations. Also, the U.S. would view any future attempts to colonize them as acts of aggression.
