The Pitch By Eden Goodall, Wesley Phale, Pascal Le Compte and Max Smith

Working Title Monotony Reigns Genre; psychological thriller

Synopsis Stuck in the cage of a conformist society where crime over- shadows moral authority Vincent, a lonely office monkey, feels the need to erase petty criminals in increasingly chilling ways in order to escape his mundane, average lifestyle. In a desperate attempt to break free from the shackles of his normal life he finds himself forgetting who he really is. His mind and body walk separate paths when he has to battle his needs against his conscience and remove someone he is previously aquatinted with. Can someone truly possess the power to judge what is right and wrong?

USP ‘Mind, Body. 2 paths. 2 choices.’ We wanted our Unique Selling point to be short and sweet and we only wanted it to consist of Nouns and Numbers. Our production is based around a Psychological thriller theme and so we wanted to keep the audience guessing with our tagline in line with the theme. We wanted it to be also related to the character and story line that we created and the battle between mind and body that the main character has made the first two words of our tagline appropriate. This then relates to our repetition of the number two which relates to the repetition of the characters original lifestyle and emphasising on the fact that the character will have many dilemmas but also solutions.

3 Act Treatment 3 Act Treatment: Beginning – We are introduced to the anti-hero protagonist and his repetitive lifestyle. We gradually see him becoming frustrated with his job and every-day life. A change begins to arise in his character that sets up the atmosphere for the middle and end of the film. Middle – The character’s changes lead him to escape boredom and routine and commit his first murder of a petty criminal, this motivates his addiction to the adrenaline from killing and he commits further acts similar to the first. The protagonist finds interest in a woman who conceals a secret from him. He unveils her secret and faces the dilemma of weather to set her free from an oppressive force or let her continue living a lie, but discovers that she is content with her private affairs. End - He struggles to decide how to follow up her confession and whether to help her even though she is adamant she doesn’t need assistance. However our anti-hero decides to take action against this woman’s mystery employer with fatal consequences.

Influences Our location for our opening sequence is highly influenced by the film Brighton rock, we plan to shoot this sequence in the dark, dingy back streets of Brighton to add to the eerie effect. Our preferable weather conditions would be rainy; this is because we can get some interesting shots of raindrops to add a sense of the landscape. The narrative is inspired by Fight Club being of a similar genre (psychological thriller.) The idea of our character needing an escape from the normal is highly influenced by the transformation between personalities during fight club. Our characterisation is based around the opening sequence of seven, we aim to characterise without giving to much away. We need to establish our protagonist as an anti-hero in much the same way as the antagonist is presented in seven.

Marketing and Audience Approval There are many different ways that films are marketed today, examples of marketing that film makers have used that has been incredibly successful would be something like the Blair Witch project. This film used a mixture of different marketing strategies, such as online marketing, it made its own website that made the story behind the movie seem real which added to it, the confusion on whether or not the movie was about real events or not made it much more interesting and the fact that it had an entire website dedicated to it This all came together to make for a very efficient advertising campaign, and through it the film was able to generate a lot of hype behind it. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and content sharing sites like Youtube and Vimeo would be prefect for us to advertise our film because they don’t hold any restriction that would be of any problem to us. Also they are very open meaning that we would be able to access them easily, that would be easily manageable for us to accomplish. Making things like pages on Facebook that talk about the movie would be the kind of thing that would be doable for us, this is done for a lot of major movies and for smaller ones, these pages are affective, however the only major disadvantage is that unless you can find a way of getting people interested in the movie enough to look for the page then our page may not receive the kind of attention that we would be hoping for. Also it would be possible for us to figure out what our potential audience thinks about the film that we will be making through the films page. Another thing that we will be able to do is to show trailers through sites like Youtube and Vimeo. This is another way that we could get feed back about the film as the audience will be given the ability to comment on the trailers and say what they think about it. The trailers will also be relatively easy and cheap to make as we would only need to take portions of the film and add some music. Our target audience is mainly adults who are interested in crime and psychological thrillers, for example we plan to market our production by putting a first exclusive 1 minute trailer during the x-factor final, which has an average viewership of 15 million and we think this would be a perfect opportunity for people to have a first glimpse at our feature. We would also have posters put up around the country, main examples include Brighton, London, and Manchester in the main city centers so that people see them on the way to work and when they go shopping etc. We would also create a website which would aim to promote the film and also sell memorabilia like t-shirts, bags, badges and accessories etc.

Summary Synopsis: With our synopsis we gave away some details about the character and what kind of person he is and what kind of person he eventually becomes. USP: Our unique selling point is a sentence that consisted of Nouns and Numbers we did it like this so that it would be short and sweet and memorable. It also fit the genre and subgenre of our production as it is based around a Psychological thriller as it mentions about the mind. It also keeps the audience guessing which is good as it makes the film seem more thrilling. It also relates to the character and relates to the choices he must make i.e. escaping his dull life or not and the two ways it could go. Three act treatment : In the beginning we introduce Vincent and we see his life, which should make the audience figure out why he may do what he does one example which will be his frustration with his job and how things go. We also show how he changes and goes from just frustrated to actively killing this will be good as we will get to the more interesting and thrilling part of his story, it should be appropriate to put this here as we would have already gotten the audience used to who he is as a character. The middle is where we will let the audience see what the constant repetition has done to him, they will see him make his first kill, the middle of the movie should be a good place for the vicious side of his character to be shown, because the audience should have gotten used to him and they will be able to understand why he is excited by his activities, which will make his kills more than just violence for the sake of having violence. We will also introduce the other character at this middle point as we will have enough time to give our new female character a kind of identity which will I think will make the story more interesting and more thrilling as it will create another character to root for. The end will be where thing will start to wrap up after Vincent and the audience find out more about the other character, Vincent will begin to find a resolution, the events of the end will be where things will become more risky for everyone, the audience will know that it is entirely possible for things to end badly for Vincent and will be engrossed in the final few minutes of the Influences: The location will be Brighton due to the influence of Brighton Rock, the weather that is typical and the dark and dingy streets that can be found around Brighton were also slight influential as it would perfectly match the dark narrative of our thriller. The narrative influence for the film was fight club as it was a similar genre psycho thriller and it too had the idea of escaping a life that a character didn’t want to continue living. The characterisation influence was from the OTS of the movie Seven, it was used because it was effective in introducing a character but also creating a mystery, an enigma for the audience to solve which will obviously add to the thrilling nature of the movie. Marketing and audience approval : We have decided to target adults, so 18 and over, who are interested in crime and psychological thrillers we plan to show off the film by putting out a 1 minute trailer during the x-Factor final, this was chose because of its extremely high viewership, this large audience would be perfect to show our trailer to as our main demographic would be present at the time, this would be our marketing strategy as for audience approval we will be using popular social media sites like Facebook by setting up a page for the film and allowing people to see any and all ads or trailers made for the film allowing the to comment about it, this would give us valuable information on how it may be doing and whether we may need to make more trailers, the amount of feedback we get will be and indicator as to how many people know about the film.
