Solution The CD player needed batteries before it could be used. Shady Shrew made up the lie. The stolen items are in his bag.

Solutions Even if it were true that concentrating on the finish line improved performance, it wouldn’t matter. Rowing is performed by facing backward to the direction of travel. Shady would be staring at the starting line!
