 Neolithic Revolution-  Major change to human life caused by the development of farming.

 Students will be able to:  Identify important changes in human life caused by the Neolithic Revolution.

 We will accomplish this by:  Watching a Crash Course Video (Agricultural Revolution)  PowerPoint Presentation (Notes)  Create Graphic Organizers  Illustrations and Justifications

 Create a graphic organizer using the following words to explain the cause and effect relationship in the development of permanent settlements: tools, settlement, hunters, gatherers, food, domestication of animals, agriculture.  Write a sentence summary that explains the graphic Organizer.

CAUSE- WHY DID IT HAPPENEFFECT- WHAT HAPPENED  Climate Change  Agriculture  Food Surplus  Agriculture  End to Hunter and Gatherers  Stone used as tools  Food Surplus  Population Increases  Permanent Settlement  Job Specialization  Development of Trading and Bartering

 Imagine you lived during the Stone Age just after the discovery of farming (Neolithic Revolution)  Create a before and after drawing, song, or poem that depicts life before farming and how it changed after.  Show 3 aspects of life before the Neolithic revolution and then how life changed after.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yocja_N5s1 I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yocja_N5s1 I  As you watch the video write down advantages in disadvantages of the Agricultural Revolution on your dry erase board.

Around 8,000 BC, Ice Age glaciers began to melt, and the Earth began to warm. A agricultural (farming), revolution began called the Neolithic Revolution. Neolithic means “New Rock.”

Neolithic= New rock or stone. Rocks/Stones were now used to make tools for FARMING. These stone tools were used as axes, digging tools, sickles and hoes.

The shift of hunting of animals and gathering of food to the domestication of animals and the systematic growing of food.

Systematic agriculture – growing food on a regular basis. Domestication of animals- adapting animals for human use. Use of bronze tools. Copper + tin=bronze.

Food Surplus – plenty of food to survive. With a food surplus, population increases and people are able to work at jobs other than farming.

Artisans – Skilled workers who made things like weapons or jewelry.

Food was stored, which caused people to specialize in other jobs. People could barter or trade for the food they needed to survive. Communities settled in larger cities, and built stronger shelters.

Trade began with other people/cultures. Population density – the average number of people living in an area. The Neolithic Age also saw a rise in diseases passed between humans and animals.(Flu, smallpox, measles).

Food Surplus

Culture – The customs or way of life a group of people follow. http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/learning/pri mary/skarabrae/

Dating back to 7,000 BC Jarmo, in N. Iraq is the oldest Neolithic farming village. 100-150 people lived in mud walled huts. They grew a variety of food grains, and domesticated animals. At Jarmo, they created their own pottery, and made their own tools out of obsidian.

Archaeologist James Mellaart, excavated arguably the 1st city in the world – Catal Hoyuk in Turkey.

From 6700-5700 BC, Catal Hoyuk had a population of up to 6,000 people. They lived in mud brick houses, farmed many grains, and domesticated animals. Excavation site of Catal Hoyuk in modern day Turkey.

Stonehenge in England, was built by Neolithic peoples around 4500-4000 years ago. It is the most famous circle of stones or megalithic monument. Image courtesy of Wikpedia Commons.

The 1 st large cities formed, and the characteristics for a developed civilization emerged. Civilization – a complex culture in which a large number of people share the same characteristics. View of the 1 st Civilization, Sumer

1. Growth of Government 2. Religion 3. Writing 4. Artistic Activity 5. Social Structure 6. Rise of Cities

Key Achievements of the Neolithic Revolution Can you think of 3 things that were mastered by man during the Neolithic Revolution?
