1 Some Sample Configurations For Traveling Laptops Several Printer Options Supports Desktop and/or TWO One Configuration for all Sites No Changes from Site to Site

2 AARP Wireless AARP Router/Firewall AARP Network Printer (Brother 2170W) This is the current “stand alone’ configuration. We use an inexpensive wireless router to support sharing of a network printer. WPA-2 encryption is used. Usually 3 to 8 laptops. Ethernet Traditional Configuration used at 12 sites for wireless printer sharing.

3 Here’s a “bullet proof” configuration used in San Francisco. Static IP addresses, printer sharing and wired connections via an expensive Ethernet hub (or switch). Usually 3 to 8 laptops. Put the counselors around a big table, and put the cables in the middle. This PC must have Printer Sharing Enabled USB Cable Inexpensive Ethernet Hub

7 AARP Wireless AARP Router/Firewall Local Site Wired Ethernet AARP Network Printer Local Center Router Internet Connection This configuration has our router connected directly to the local Ethernet network. It requires a Cat- 5 outlet in the proximity of the room where we do taxes, and requires a single IP address, either static or assigned by DHCP. Usually 3 to 8 laptops. Configuration used at Redwood City Senior Center Ethernet RJ-45 Plug in Router “WAN” Port

8 AARP Wireless AARP Router/Firewall AARP Network Printer Local Center Router Internet Connection Usually 3 to 8 laptops. Existing Center Wireless TrendNet TEW-640MB Wireless Bridge Configuration used at San Carlos Senior Center Last year, and several more sites this year. Where a wired Ethernet connection is not available, this configuration uses the local center’s wireless Internet. It requires two IP address (one for the bridge, one for the router). Ethernet
