Pre – Easter preparations start 40 days before Easter (Sundays are not counted). The day is called – ASH DAY. People go to the church. The priest makes cross on their forehead with ash. 40 – day Lent starts.

28th, March 2013: Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday – in Slovakia called Green Thursday. It commemorates Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostoles. There´s a tradition in Slovakia that people eat something green – e.g. spinach.

29th, March 2013: Good Friday we commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death. The day is called Black Friday, Great Friday. It´s said that Christ suffered from our sins. People have strict fasting – they mustn´t eat meat. They usually eat fish.

30st, March 2013: Easter Saturday or Bright Saturday
30st, March 2013: Easter Saturday or Bright Saturday. It´s the time when Jesus Christ rested in his grave. For people Lent ends and women prepare meals for next days. They prepare smoked ham, sausages, home – made cheese, boiled eggs. They boil and grate beetroot with horse – radish and whipped cream. They make cakes, too.

31st, March 2013: Easter Sunday. It´s commemorated Reserrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. When women came to his grave, they found it empty. They came back crying to the town and men whipped and watered them. Nowaday people eat all prepared meals.

1st, April 2013: Easter Monday. In Slovakia there is a lot of fun on Monday – but mostly for boys. They go from house to house and they water girls (if they find them) and whip them with plaited willow cane. Younger boys say some traditional rhyme.

1st, April 2013: Easter Monday. According to the tradition that all girls poured with buckets of water will be beautiful and healthy. In vice versa girls tie colourful ribbon on the cane and they offer some cake, chocolate egg and painted egg.

T There are other possibities to decorate eggs.
Easter in our region – there are very popular to blow out eggs and then paint and dye them. In the nearest villages women scrap dyed eggs with needle. They also write rhymes on them. T There are other possibities to decorate eggs.
