The start of CC (in 1976) was caused by a demand for a unit for the distribution of flowers and plants… The CC Container Short introduction of Container Centralen 3

Activities started up in 1976 under GASA Group and other Danish flower exporters 1980: Container Centralen AmbA founded in Denmark 1989: Container Centralen A/S founded (limited company) with Dutch flower exporters as co- shareholders 50% Container Centralen Danish Flower exporters Dutch Flower exporters 4

Some key figures ….. Head office in Odense, Denmark About 130 employees worldwide Serving more than 23,000 customers across 40 different countries Every day, we help more than 80,000 users to move products Annual turnover in 2007 € 60 mill.

…supplemented by a simplified Pool System The CC Pool System is in principle based on one-for-one exchange. Empty units are exchanged for full units and vice versa. Reduced number of transportation units in the entire supply chain. Higher efficiency – lower costs. 1 full unit  1 empty unit == 6

Global expansion in the green sector ? High growth of plant production outside EU Support the EU market – production especially in Central America Increasing costs in Europe The future way of transportation will be possible by sea 9

Why produce outside Europe? Increasing prices on fuel/heating Lack of labor Increasing labor costs High costs on premises It is possible to ship the varieties by sea due to technical developments and the assortment of varieties it self 10

What actions have been made ? Development of new items to support sea transport −Experiments with different gasses and temperatures −Light bars to give the plants light during the long transport −Material to support the packing −Etc. European producers establish outside Europe mainly in Central America Different interest organizations became more visible CC where asked at several seminars to support the logistics 11

Requests from the producers to CC A more efficient way of packing and shipping plants on sea containers Useful item - also in the internal processes Delivery of a better quality without transport damages Cost savings Improvement of the logistics in general 12

Requests from European importers to CC Common system to transport plants on instead of ex. wooden cages or in sea container build racks Less damage on the plants during transport System that is efficient to use and fits the existing production in order to decrease labor costs in the nurseries for the final treatment. More environmental friendly packaging Improvement of the logistics in general 13

The new supply chain European customer CC depot in Europe CC depot in Costa Rica Costa Rican Supplier 14

The concept……. 15 A single payment per CC container. (service fee) This includes: Delivery of CC’s in Costa Rica Administration Handling (e.g. in CC depots, etc.) Rental of CC material (only up to a certain limit) Maintenance Balances control through the Internet

Packing and transportation 16

The receipt in Europe

Challenges Infrastructure Import taxes Import regulations Willingness to optimize/change processes. You really need to push! Cash flow management because of the long transport time for both producers and suppliers 18

Future developments Different initiatives to support transport of even more varieties on longer distances like light, gas etc. Agreements with authorities to make import/export of plants and supporting products more easy Other products to be handled more efficient, like fruit and vegetables 19
