Where EGMUS came from the necessity to continue LEG-work beyond the 3-years period (Leg stopped February 1999 and the new working group on cultural statistics strated only in March 2000) the necessity to continue to use the knowhow and the experience of the experts involved in LEG-project as well as those meeting on a regular basis in Berlin and to work together the necessity to bring together statistical and museum experts (an important deficiency in LEG-project) the necessity to produce harmonised statistics of the musem sector the necessity to establish a permanent group dealing with museum statistics

What is the aim and what are the objectives of EGMUS a) To achieve more comparability in the statistical data in the sub-domain of museums within the MS b) To harmonise these data with Eurostat needs, custom and practice as well as with those of UNESCO c) To produce comparable cultural statistics on museums relevant to policy-making and policy-evaluation in Europe d) To agree on common questions and definitions based on UNESCO framework e) To agree on indicators and guidelines f) To produce regularly data and tables by including relevant aspects of museums, e.g.: financing and expenditure, employment, participation, etc g) To look for the integration of museum surveys into obligatory and regular surveys directed by Eurostat like Time-Use Survey, Household Budget Survey, Survey on Income and Living Conditions, etc

How EGMUS is functionning EGMUS includes coordinators of the LEG-project, very active members of the restricted working-group, experts from the museum field and members from associations working in museum area as well as external experts EGMUS members ( Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonis, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands) meet on a yearly basis and the coordination group as often as needed the emphasis lays on a pragmatic approach ( introduce more flexibility in administrative work and work process in general, maintain active relationship with European and International organizations dealing with museum related affairs,...)

Future activities (general) to motivate missing countries to join EGMUS to update the list of questions and indicators to improve time of producing comparable data to finalize and publish the second edition of the Guide to European Museum Statistics To fill existing gaps
