3 What is a Killer Whale?  Largest species of the dolphin family  Appeared about 11 million years ago  Predatory black and white toothed whale  3-5 types of killer whales

4 Other names for the Killer Whale  Blackfish  Grampus  Orca  Killer Whale is from the Spanish asesina ballenas meaning whale killer

5 Where they live  Found in all oceans  Mediterranean and Arabian seas  Prefer cooler temperature and polar regions  Large populations live off the coast of Iceland and Argentina waters

6 Diet  Fish and other cold blooded prey (i.e. salmon and sharks)  Mammal prey (i.e. grey whales and seals)  Bird prey (i.e. penguins)  Some even eat the Great White Sharks

7 Types  Resident: most commonly sighted  Transient: vocalize in less complicated dialects  Offshore: smallest of the three, eat mammals  3 new killer whale types have been recently documented in Antarctic

8 Behavior  Frequently active at surface doing acrobatics  Very vocal  Playful

9 Life Cycle  Live with their Moms for entire life  Mature around age 15  In first 6 months of life 37%-50% of all calves die  Female lifespan averages 50-90 years  Male lifespan averages 29-60 years

10 Myths  Genus name Orcinus means “of or belonging to the kingdom of the dead”  Gave people idea that it’s the "whale that brings death" or "demon from hell.“  Name is also similar to Orcus, Roman God of the underworld  People focus on “Killer” part of the name  Now people see that they are friendly the negative stereotype fades

11 Physical Appearance  marked with a black back, white chest and sides, and a white patch above and behind the eye.  Heavy robust body  Dorsal fin with grey “saddle patch” at fin’s rear  Calves yellow or orange tint

12 Keiko  Captured in Iceland  Developed Skin Lesions  Starred as Willy in Free Willy  During his time in Oregon he gained a lot of weight  Plan of returning him to wild caused controversy  They tried to set him free but no orca pod would adopt him  He died of pneumonia in Norway on December 12, 2003

13 Interesting Facts  World’s most powerful predator  Mothers give birth every three to ten years, after a 17 month pregnancy  23-32 ft. in size  Weight up to 6 tons  Each tooth about 7.6 cm
