#64 Calculate ∆H° for each of the following reactions using the data in Appendix 4: 4Na (s) + O 2(g)  2Na 2 O (s) 2Na (s) +2H 2 O (l)  2NaOH (aq) + H 2(g) 2Na (s) + CO 2(g)  NA 2 O (s) + CO (g) Explain why a water or carbon dioxide fire extinguisher might not be effective in putting out a sodium fire.

Equation: *Product - Reactant = ΔH* 4Na (s) + O 2(g)  2Na 2 O (s) 4 (0) + 0 2(-416) -832 – 0 ΔH= -832 EXOTHERMIC!

Equation: *Product - Reactant = ΔH* 2Na (s) +2H 2 O (l)  2NaOH (aq) + H 2(g) 0 + 2(-286) 2(-470) + 0 -940 - (-572) ΔH= -368 EXOTHERMIC!

Equation: *Product - Reactant = ΔH* 2Na (s) + CO 2(g)  NA 2 O (s) + CO (g) 2 (0) + -395.5 -416 + -110.5 -526.5 - -393.5 ΔH= -133.0 EXOTHERMIC!

Answer: The reaction of water and sodium release heat. The reaction of carbon dioxide and sodium release heat also. They are both exothermic reactions.
