Key Strategic Areas  Research excellence  International profile  Research-led teaching  Teamwork

Research Excellence  Publications in high quality peer reviewed international journals Research outputs Research outputs Our collective impact/ profile could be higher Our collective impact/ profile could be higher  PG Research Pgs per head is not high, but offset by Research FTEs Pgs per head is not high, but offset by Research FTEs  Research funding, including applied research, is very strong

Research Excellence  Total research income (by cluster) Quarter to October 2005 Quarter to October 2005 ASAP contributes 41% of SoG Research Overheads (Whole School) ASAP contributes 41% of SoG Research Overheads (Whole School) ASAP contributes 91% of SoG Research Overheads (Human Geography) ASAP contributes 91% of SoG Research Overheads (Human Geography)

International Profile  Leeds Spatial Analysis is still an international brand  Strong connections through RSAI, ?Geocomputation,…  Is there an extent to which we are living on past glories International events in Leeds? International events in Leeds? International visitors to Leeds? International visitors to Leeds? International journal in Leeds! International journal in Leeds!

Research-led teaching  PGTs still well-ahead of other clusters Masters programme still fresh? Masters programme still fresh?  ODL Programme Perceived as a great success Perceived as a great success  Another perception is that we are ‘overteaching’ i.e. average load is too high We should probably be bidding for a Teaching Fellow within the cluster We should probably be bidding for a Teaching Fellow within the cluster

Teamwork  Our physical accommodation is not commensurate with University rhetoric of international excellence/ top 50 status  Seminar series has done a valuable job in bringing us together on a regular basis Do we need to increase the quality and/ or amount of social contact within the group? Do we need to increase the quality and/ or amount of social contact within the group?

Financial perspective from the School of Geography

Very Important Slide  A very important slide is coming next…

Organisational perspective from the School of Geography  Further develop a flexible staffing strategy:  To control academic staff costs, we might consider revising our staffing strategy that currently looks to replace a staff member X in cluster Y with a new staff member in cluster Y.  Replacing like with like within clusters reduces the flexibility of the school to invest in the overall growth portfolio of the community, which in the long run is in all clusters interests.  A more flexible policy would tie the timing of hiring to staff exits but the direction and type of hiring to overall strategic need.  MB discussion needed.

School of Geography White Paper Strategic Planning for Research Clusters We have one but it isn’t very good Don’t understand this

School of Geography White Paper Research Cluster Growth and Development Action needed Restructuring complete ASAP in Good shape Action urgently needed Some progress: More needed Action needed
