Some basics about the ion… Ion (EYE-ahn) An atom, or a group of atoms, that carry an electric charge Forms when at atom either loses electrons or gains electrons Loses electron = POSITIVE CHARGE (+) Gains electrons = NEGATIVE CHARGE (-) Cation (KAT-eye-ən)= Positive charged ion Anion (AN-eye-ən) = Negative charged ion
- Ionic Bonds Ions and Ionic Bonds When an atom loses an electron, it loses a negative charge and become a positive ion. When an atom gains an electron, it gains a negative charge and becomes a negative ion.
- Ionic Bonds Ions and Ionic Bonds Ionic bonds form as a result of the attraction between positive and negative ions.
- Ionic Bonds Properties of Ionic Compounds In general, ionic compounds are hard, brittle crystals that have high melting points. When dissolved in water or melted, they conduct electricity.
IONIC BONDS Form between atoms of metals and nonmetals with very different electronegativity Bond formed by transfer of electrons Produces charged ions in all states. Conductors have a high melting point. Examples NaCl (Sodium Chloride) Table Salt CaCl 2 (Calcium Chloride) Keeps packaging dry K 2 O (Potassium Oxide) Used in fertilizer
