OBJECTIVES  We will define risk assessment and apply risk reduction principles to determine roadway position, establish vehicle speed, and communicate with other roadway users  We will assess moderate risk driving environments and apply space management concepts to determine roadway position, establish vehicle speed, and communicate with other roadway users  I will be able to demonstrate SEEit space management system in a driving simulation.  I will be to demonstrate my understanding of the 6 basic areas of operating space around the vehicle.

JOURNAL #2 11/10/2014 Part 1: What does SEEit Stand for? Part 2: Look at the picture to the right and describe what you would do in this situation? Please write in complete sentences.

PANAMA Get out your “SEEit Worksheet” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqCWIH8wok4

Module 4 TOPIC 1 ~ RISK ASSESSMENT ~

Module 4 – Topic 1 1.Risk - A chance of injury, damage or loss. 2.Chance – The probability or likelihood of a crash. 3.Give some examples of potential injuries, damages or loss resulting from a crash. Injuries Damages Loss Broken BonesVehicle DamageFinancial loss ParalysisProperty DamageLoss of opportunity Death

Module 4 – Topic 1 Shoulder Partner #4 4. How does increasing speed increase risk? Increased speed results in less reaction time, longer braking distance and more severe collisions….Like this clip below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTiS0JDuUGY

Module 4 – Topic 1 5. Differentiate between risk assessment, risk acceptance and risk compensation. Risk assessment – the ability to recognize and determine levels of risk. Risk acceptance - how much a person is willing to risk Risk compensation - making adjustments to reduce risk Who is willing to take a risk (Mystery Box)? Shoulder Partner Relate this activity to driving

Module 4 – Topic 1 6. Three Principles for reducing risk 1. Never risk more than you can afford to lose. 2. Do not risk a lot for a little. 3. Consider the odds and your situation. 6. Class Discussion - What are some examples of each (In regards to driving)?

Module 4 – Topic 1 7. Name some behaviors that increase driving risk. Speeding Failure to yield right of way DUI Disregarding a traffic sign or signal Following to close Improper turns Unsafe passing Failure to wear a safety belt Talking on cell phone while driving 8. What are some good driving habits that reduce driving risks? Practice SEEit Develop good decision-making skills

WHAT’S THE RISK? Get out your “Risk Scenarios Worksheet”

Module 4 TOPIC 2 ~ SPACE MANAGEMENT ~

Module 4 – Topic 2 1.Six basic areas of operating space around the vehicle. 123 45 6

Module 4 – Topic 2 2. Open Zone – A space or area that has no restrrictions to the line of sight or path of travel. 3. Closed Zone – A space or area that is not available for a car’s path of travel or has a restriction to the driver’s line of sight. 4. Describe a changing Zone – An open zone which becomes a closed zone or a closed zone that is changing to an open zone. Shoulder Partner #5 & #6
