JASON BARROCAS KEVIN HERNANDEZ TANISHA RICHARD DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY - MIAMI, FLORIDA Enhanced Hurricane Protection

Problem The purpose of this project is to design a retractable dome that could protect a home in the event of a hurricane The majority of damage is caused by the storm’s intense wind Hurricane shutters and impact glass protect only the windows

Project Goals Reduce rebuilding costs Protect human life Current advances in technology make it plausible to offer better protection The retractable roofs of stadiums offer a blueprint for retractable domes

Design Concepts A dome structure offers the best resistance to lift and drag forces Design Criteria: Ribbed Structure of Protective Dome Seven arched trusses Mesh material covering the frame Reduces wind speed by 60% Category 5 Hurricane – 155+ mph Reduces wind speed to a manageable level

Economic Feasibility Type Accordion Shutters Impact Glass Electric Roll Down Shutters MaterialsAl Wood, Glass Polyester Film Al Price Range$16-$20 / sq ft$30-$35 / sq ft$65-$75 / sq ft Est. Total Cost* $6,300.00 $11,375.00 $24,500.00 *Estimate was calculated using 350 sq ft of windows Estimated Cost for Enhanced Hurricane Protection  7 Trusses comprised of W16 X 26 I-Beams:$13,000  Goal for entire steel frame (trusses, pivots and joints):<$20,000  Goal for entire dome (parts and labor, fully installed):<$50,000

Conceptual Designs

Current Design Diameter: 70 ft Dome Height:35 ft Estimated Weight  7 Steel trusses:18,000 lb  Frame (trusses, pivots and joints):28,000 lb  Entire Dome (frame, mechanism and mesh):33,000 lb

Side Profile

Conclusion Objective is to achieve substantial hurricane protection Safer than products on the market now Prototype Testing  Budget:$2,000  Wind Testing  FEM Analysis  Structural Analysis Long term goals  Reduce cost of rebuilding  Future design accommodating apartments and townhouses
