Bible Question Box Questions about the Lord’s Supper Luke 22:14-20; Matt. 26:26-29

2 # 1: Where in the Bible does it teach against the use of wine in Communion? Elements of the supper – Matt. 26: 26-29 Unleavened bread (Passover, 26:17- 19; Exo. 12:8; Num. 9:11) Fruit of the vine – Produce of the (grape) vine; Juice of the grape – Matt. 26:29

3 # 1: Where in the Bible does it teach against the use of wine in Communion? Fruit of the vine was not fermented By definition “Nature never forms spirituous liquors; she rots the grape upon the branch; but it is art which converts the juice into (alcoholic) wine.” (French chemist Count Chaptal, cited by Wm. Patton in Bible Wines, 16-17)

4 # 1: Where in the Bible does it teach against the use of wine in Communion? Fruit of the vine was not fermented Occasion of its institution (Passover) Leavening agents removed from house Scripture prohibits intoxicating drink – Prov. 20:1; 23:31 (Symbolizes Christ’s blood?!) Like the bread, it is free of outside influences & impurities (1 Cor. 5:7-8)

5 # 1: Where in the Bible does it teach against the use of wine in Communion? Objections Unavailable (couldn’t keep juice fresh) “If you wish to have must [grape-juice] all year, put grape-juice in an amphora and seal the cork with pitch; sink it in a fishpond. After 30 days take it out. It will be grape-juice for a whole year.” (Cato)

6 # 1: Where in the Bible does it teach against the use of wine in Communion? Objections 1 st century Jews commonly kept Passover with fermented beverage Not proof of legitimate use today (Matt. 26:29) Did Jesus violate the Passover statutes? (Num. 9:3)

7 # 1: Where in the Bible does it teach against the use of wine in Communion? If we can change the fruit of the vine to alcoholic beverage, why can’t Mormons change it to water? Fruit of the vine symbolizes blood of the covenant offered for the sins of the world – Heb. 9:14

8 Question #2 # 2: Suppose there are brethren who are unable to attend Sunday services & partake of the Lord’s supper (sick, elderly, etc.). Does God’s Word allow for us to take the emblems to each Christian at home individually & serve them there?

9 # 2: Taking the supper outside the assembly of the saints? No Bible authority for the practice Why does this view/practice exist? Certainly out of concern for brethren Have we elevated the Lord’s supper above other acts of worship? If so, by what authority?

10 # 2: Taking the supper outside the assembly of the saints? Lord’s supper is an individual responsibility fulfilled in the assembly Came together – Acts 20:7 Come together in one place…to eat – 1 Cor. 11:20, 33 Silence of the Scriptures – Col. 3:17; 1 Ths. 5:21; 1 Cor. 4:6

11 # 2: Taking the supper outside the assembly of the saints? If it is scriptural to do so, then… Take the collection plate, the song books, prayers & the pulpit, too! Why have assembled worship at all? (Heb. 10:25) Assembly has purpose – Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:18, 20; 14:26; 16:2

12 # 3: Is the Christian obligated to eat the Lord’s supper at each assembly? No, because… Silence of the Scriptures Logically extends to all assembly activities What of late arrivers at same assembly? If true, then at each assembly, all activities must be repeated

13 # 3: Is the Christian obligated to eat the Lord’s supper at each assembly? No, because… Some commands are fulfilled when done once, others are repeatable One time: Giving (1 Cor. 16:2); Lord’s supper (Acts 20:7) Multiple times: Prayer, singing, preaching (1 Cor. 14:26; Acts 2:42; Eph. 5:19)

14 # 3: Is the Christian obligated to eat the Lord’s supper at each assembly? No, because… Though separated by time & distance, “we all partake of that one bread” – 1 Cor. 10:16-17 Saints who eat in morning & those who eat at night are “one bread & one body” for “we all partake of that one bread” “Wait” for one another, 1 Cor. 11:33

15 The Lord’s Supper Memorial of Christ’s sacrificial death Dedicated the new covenant Redeems us from our sins Proclamation – 1 Cor. 11:26 Must discern the body of Christ when we eat, or we condemn ourselves – 1 Cor. 11:27-29 (Jno. 4:24)
