Peek – ACS Lite Deployment Quixote Traffic Corporation Peter Ragsdale August 17, 2006

August 17, 2006 Presentation Overview Deployment Area Implementation Approach  Previous Traffic System  Field Changes Required  Architecture  IQ Connect™ NTCIP Translator Challenges Future Directions Summary

August 17, 2006 Deployment Area Manatee County, Florida State Route 70 in Bradenton FL Also includes an intersection at US 301 and 51 st Avenue  Arterial has a turn included Nine Intersections total

August 17, 2006 Implementation Approach - Previous Traffic System Peek 3000E Controllers Closed-loop CLMATS™ System  Master/Local system  9600 Baud FSK dedicated communications  Supports Upload, Download, Status Monitoring Detection mostly loops, one video system

August 17, 2006 Implementation Approach - Field Changes Required Total = nine (9) harnesses, twenty-one (21) shelf mounted amplifiers and six (6) 2-channel loop detector cards Locate and split out loops at the following locations:  Caruso Rd – Locate advanced loops for East and West (detectors 9- 14)  Natalie Way – Locate loops; split out phase 2/6 detectors  45th – Locate loops for 2/6; split out phase 6.  39th – Locate loops; split out East and West detectors  37th – Locate loops; split out phase 2/6 detectors.  33rd – Locate loops; split out phase 2/6 detectors.  30th – Split out phase 2/6 detectors.  SR70 & US301 – Tie loop detectors for Phase 7 (7 & 15) together to free detector 15. Split N/S (2/6) detectors. Leave curb and center lanes tied together on phases 4/8; split out fast lane and wire into channels (phase 4) 17 and (phase 8) 18.  US301 & 51st – Split out phase 2/6 detectors Installed 6 Peek Unitrak Video Detection Systems

August 17, 2006 Implementation Approach - Architecture Converted to a “Master-less” System  ACS-Lite Computer communicates directly to each controller  Remote Access to ACS-Lite Computer available  9600 Baud FSK Multi-drop Communication System from ACS-Lite to Controllers All controllers are on one line  Disconnected from previous CLMATS™ System Upload / Download available at intersections only Used IQ Connect™ NTCIP Translators

August 17, 2006 Implementation Approach - Architecture ACS-Lite IQ Connect NTCIP Translators RS-232 Serial Existing Peek 3000E Controllers 9600 Baud FSK Communications

August 17, 2006 Implementation Approach - IQ Connect™ NTCIP Translator Converts NTCIP Standard Objects to proprietary protocol of controllers  Allows connection of non-NTCIP devices to an NTCIP-based system such as ACS-Lite Most ACS-Lite functionality developed within the Translator device  Polls attached device using existing protocols for various status information, etc  Facilitates migration of different controller types in the future since most work already completed  Some minor work required in controller to generate new information required by ACS-Lite External version of IQ Connect™ used (internal now available)

August 17, 2006 Challenges Translator / Controller Communications  Heavy communications between translator and controller was not anticipated in original translator design Temporary Loss of Communications had negative effect Require to buffer and anticipate ACS-Lite communications ACS-Lite modified to provide “gaps” between “sets” Modified Proprietary Protocol to include mapping of additional System Sensor data Needed to generate new information regarding reason for vehicle and pedestrian demands Informing ACS-Lite of controller database changes

August 17, 2006 Future Directions Support existing systems such as CLMATS™ concurrently with ACS-Lite  Implementation of a “pass-thru” command within the translator Port the ACS-Lite algorithm to Linux and operate on an ATC-based Master controller Integrate ACS-Lite into a central system and operate it over Ethernet communications (currently supported by the translators) Port ACS-Lite version of translator to additional translators used for other Quixote family controllers Enhance ACS-Lite for Interval-based conrtollers

August 17, 2006 Summary ACS-Lite is a cost-effective implementation of Adaptive Control  Minimal additional detection when compared to other Adaptive Control Systems  Minimal Field work required  Reasonable number of controllers per communication line Depending on network, it may not require any changes Use of an NTCIP translator is a feasible and cost- effective approach to NTCIP and ACS-Lite
