Leader: Cheering crowds sang their praises as Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem riding on a donkey. People: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Call to Worship

Leader: With palms and branches and with their clothes cast on the road to make a pathway, the people sang their joyous acclamation. People: Ride on, Jesus. Ride through the crowds. Ride on in anguish. Ride on to betrayal. Ride on to the cross. All: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

God of all times and places, we confess that we would rather join the crowds than stand alone. We prefer the popular point of view to a solitary witness for justice and truth. Prayer of Confession

We sing “Hosanna” when everyone else is doing so – but not when the hostile “Good Friday” forces may hear us. We believe Christ came into the world to save sinners; and we know that means us. Be patient we pray.

Help us to understand our part in these Holy Week occurrences. Pour out your Spirit on us, filled with forgiveness and grace, that we in turn may share the good news of Christ to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hosanna, Loud Hosanna Hosanna, loud hosanna The little children sang Through pillared court and temple The joyful anthem rang; To Jesus, who had blessed them Close folded to His breast The children sang their praises The simplest and the best.

From Olivet they followed ‘Mid an exultant crowd, The victor palm branch waving And chanting clear and loud; The Lord of earth and heaven Rode on in lowly state, Should on His bidding wait.
