2 What is noise-induced hearing loss? It occurs when the tiny sensory hair cells in our inner ears are damaged by sounds that are too loud and that last for too long.

3 I have been teaching students about the damage different noise levels can cause on their hearing and ways to protect it. Remember: Listen responsibly. Think about the volume. Keep track of the time.

4 Excessive levels of loud music heard through headphones are partly blamed, along with other sources of loud sounds. Like the sounds in the lunchroom during lunch, PE, in the classrooms and just plain loud talking. I used an iPad with a sound meter app to measure the sounds of these places in our school. Prolonged noise produces damage to the tiny hair cells of the inner ear, and they cannot be repaired. It is permanent. Damaged Hair Cells Normal Hair Cells
