3 James 4:13-17 13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." 14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Proverbs 21:5 “The plans of the diligent lead to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes to poverty.”

9 James 4:13,15-16 13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." … 15 Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.

10 Luke 12:16-19 16b “The land of a rich man was very productive. 17 "And he began… saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' 18 … 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 'And [then] I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."'

23 Discussion Questions 1) Secular: is it just another word for self-sufficiency? What do you think? How are we to live our lives? Should there be a “secular” part? 2) Ecclesiastes 7:2 “It is better to go to a house of mourning Than to go to a house of feasting, Because that is the end of every man, And the living takes it to heart.” How do you think this fits James’ message? 3) The presence of presumption often reveals the ingratitude of grace. How so?
